[HOW-TO] Distributed incremental & encrypted backup

Featured Replies

I finally managed to finish my guide for setting up a distributed incremental & encrypted backup. The idea is to be able to perform backups on remote unRAID servers. Encryption is used to make sure your private data is safe even when saved to a friend's place.

The system is based upon:

  • chroot sftp using public keys authentication for automatic login
  • duplicity for the incremental & encrypted backup part (based on rsync, rdiff and gnupg)
  • duply script which is a wrapper for duplicity

The guide can be found here:

http://danynativel.com/blog/2012/01/03/distributed-encrypted-backup-between-unraid-machines/

Please note that the remote server doesn't have to be an unRAID one. Duplicity supports all kind of backend servers including Amazon S3:

  • ftp
  • hsi
  • cf+http
  • imap
  • imaps
  • rsync
  • s3
  • s3+http
  • scp
  • ssh
  • tahoe
  • webdav
  • webdavs

Please report your experience.

Thank you for the idea. But I don't know how really make it done.
