March 13, 201115 yr Hi Guys. Hope i put this in the right section Fairly new to this forum. I have been using unRaid for a few months now trialling it at work here with some left over parts. I am going to be building a server very soon for unraid and would like your input in the selected parts i have chosen. Im not too sure when it comes to RAM with regards to the speed and latency of what is required. also the expansion card? Thanks Steve File Server: Case: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=182/ID=2526/SID=160342863/productdetails.html MB: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=262/ID=14724/SID=236684108/productdetails.html CPU: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=187/ID=6569/SID=1051025654/productdetails.html RAM: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=254/ID=6679/SID=1051025654/productdetails.html PSU: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=534/ID=14135/SID=592002490/productdetails.html#DetailedSpecifications HD: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=235/ID=13652/SID=944164404/productdetails.html card:http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=178/ID=15204/SID=228844571/productdetails.html
March 13, 201115 yr Case: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=182/ID=2526/SID=160342863/productdetails.html Not sure how many drives you plan to put in the machine but there are cheaper and in my opinion better cases. The AZZA Helios 910 for instance. MB: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=262/ID=14724/SID=236684108/productdetails.html DO NOT GET THIS MOTHERBOARD!!! IT WILL NOT WORK WELL FOR YOU AS HAS BEEN FOUND OUT BY OTHERS. Look at the Hardware Compatibility Page for an idea of what is/has been used before. I have not personally used any of the ones I am about to link to but all match the basic criteria of a good board. This Jetway, this Foxconn, this MSI should all work. The Jetway is very expandable and has been used by another member on this forum with success. CPU: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=187/ID=6569/SID=1051025654/productdetails.html Seem fine and a lot of people are using it. RAM: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=254/ID=6679/SID=1051025654/productdetails.html Get generic RAM, no need for heatsinks and expensive stuff. RAM does not matter all that much to an unRAID system. PSU: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=534/ID=14135/SID=592002490/productdetails.html#DetailedSpecifications A fine choice. HD: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=235/ID=13652/SID=944164404/productdetails.html A fine choice, just be sure to use unRAID 4.7 or later and with 4.7 to set the default partion format on the settings page to MBR: 4K aligned. card:http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=178/ID=15204/SID=228844571/productdetails.html I believe someone is using this card with success under 4.7 though it seems to not be working under the 5.0bX series right now. I would try to find this supermicro card. You will need specific cables for it (usually about 15 per cable) but it is a much better choice for attaching a far number of drives.
March 13, 201115 yr Author Thanks for the input. I have just read in a few threads of that MB being problematic. will keep looking for something else. I sure am glad i asked first. thanks again Steve
March 14, 201115 yr Definitely go with the AOC-SASLP-MV8 if you can. It was recommended to me by another member last week. I ordered one to give it a try and it has performed so well (knocked 2 hours off my parity sync) over the weekend that I'm going to switch three other servers to it.
March 14, 201115 yr RAM: http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=254/ID=6679/SID=1051025654/productdetails.html Get generic RAM, no need for heatsinks and expensive stuff. RAM does not matter all that much to an unRAID system. Get Basic RAM, like prostuff has said, you don't need all that fancy stuff. Personal opinion but I'd get a branded RAM, something like Kingston over the generic ones. The price difference is fairly small that's why. Josh

Josh Totally agree, but check the compatability list on Asus website first (if you go with an asus board - most seem to) as some Kingston memory is not compatable with asus boards.
