New 3% full HDD (ST8000DM004) speeds going down sub 1MB/s

Hi there,

Currently on the UNRAID trial, really enjoying the OS so far.

However, I've ran into a problem with a drive I bought the other week to expand my storage, its stupidly slow. Sub 1MB/s slow, now I've heard bad things about SMR but come on. Its the ST8000DM004 that I've bought off amazon and shucked. I noticed SABnzbd acting odd and funnily enough I checked the download and complete folder speeds:

Tried moving stuff onto it from windows, initial speeds of over ~110MB/s dropping down to this after about 7GB in this case. (mkv files ranging from 3-6GB in size.)

I also ran disk speed on it a few days before this started happening, and now after to compare. Just a day's difference.

The drive is only 3% ~250GB full.

Array has no parity so not sure if turbowrite or anything of the sort has anything to do with it. No cache either.

Swapped sata ports, restarted the system, to no avail. My other 1TB seagate works perfectly, albeit its a 7200 non smr.

If the best choice of action is to return this and never touch SMR again, so be it but thought I'd ask in case its something else.

Do let me know if there is any info I've forgotten to add.

Thanks.

That looks like a disk problem.

Have you installed the drive into another Windows or Linux system and tested it out over there, with the same problems?

Just in the process of moving files off it, then I'll move it to my PC and test it there.

Edit:

Seatools reports no issues on the short tests, moving a 40gb mkv file to the drive had 3 dips down to 15-20MB/s before recovering to 100MB/s which is what I assumed is normal SMR operation, not 700KB/s... Not exactly a fair test though, I will fill up the drive to 250GB as it was in the unraid server, and try to move the same exact folder onto it that I used before then and report back.

Testing

After running some tests I'm inclined to say the drive is actually fine, at least on windows in NTFS.

Single big movie file

Usenet big movie, 105 ~500mb parts (on UNRAID with the slow speed issue the speed would dip into the single numbers, and freeze at 100%, never unpack.)

Can't think of anything Unraid related that would explain the low read speeds, maybe the disk was doing some housekeeping at the time it was tested with diskspeed.

Unpack onto cache drive then move final file to the drive. Unpacking is one of the worst case scenarios for shingled drives, way to many file modifications done.

I have three of these drives. I contacted seagate and was told that these drives are not meant for NAS systems because they have a low write speed
