Need help troubleshooting "Machine check events"

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Lately I have been experiencing random reboots on my server, followed by the message "Machine check events logged" in my logs.

I feel like this could be a hardware issue, but I don't know how to troubleshoot it, and I am therefore grateful for any and all inputs!

A little more background info:

I have gotten some help on this before, from @JorgeB over here, who very helpfully pointed out a BIOS setting I needed to change (Power supply idle setting). This helped reduce how often my server crashes/reboots, but it still happens from time to time. It usually happens when the server is under load, although not always "heavy" load (i.e. when plex is converting a movie, and noting else is going on).

After running Unraid for about 6 years, I recently upgraded my hardware (to be able to run a Windows VM). This upgrade included an AMD Ryzen 5950x and an nVidia RTX 3080. I knew this would require a lot of power, so I used outervision's power supply calculator to guesstimate my required PSU size. The reccommended size was 734W, and since there have been a PSU shortage in my country lately, I "only" got an 850W PSU.

I am wondering if that PSU might be underpowered, but then again I don't know how to check this...

So grateful for anyone that bothered to read all that, and I thank you in advance for any tips for solving this issue!

Update: I have actually got a sure way of crashing my server. I have a docker container for Handbrake to convert all my ingested movies from MakeMKV, however Handbrake causes an instant crash in a matter of seconds after I start a conversion.

Update: after some more testing, I tried turning off "AMD performance boost" in the "Tips and tweaks" plugin. My system seems more stable, although I don't understand why...

Possibly related to the scaling driver for my CPU. Tips and tweaks plugin says I have installed an ACPI driver for my CPU, but that's just a generic driver. This may be the reason for my crashes.
