March 16, 201115 yr I've just put together a new little server (in my sig) and am probably going to upgrade the RAM, but one reason is because I'm having issues with the cache drive "disappearing" when other drives spin down. When I'm watching a TV show streaming from the cache drive, if another drive spins down, there won't just be a stutter, the cache drive will disappear and I have to close the video drive and restart. If I'm writing to another drive apart from the one that spins down, the write will often fail as well. I know about spin-up groups, but all the drives are on one controller, and I don't want them all spinning up all day just because I'm reading from the cache drive. Will adding RAM help in this case by caching the video file being streamed in full (let's say I add 4GB of RAM and the video file is 1.5GB)? Or, will the spindown of the other drives always break reading and writing of the drive in use? Thanks! Neil.
