Hello,

 

So I am trying to passthrough and boot of a NVME drive. I have tried installing windows 11 via both the installer via the VM and BareMetal then boot. I have followed both of spaceinvaderone's videos (How to passthrough and boot from an NVMe controller for bare metal performance in KVM/unRAID - YouTube) Per the forum post this one is outdated and clover should not be needed so i did not set up that part, correct me if i am wrong there, and (How to dual boot baremetal windows and unRAID then boot the same windows as a vm - YouTube)
With no luck. 

I am able to boot and install it via the ISO but once windows reboots during the install process it does not boot back to the NVME drive.

Here is my XML let me know if you need anything else or have any advice.

I have looked everywhere i can think of online and couldnt find a solution, if there is another thread to reference then please direct me there.

update: I saw that you attached diagnostic, yes it's the nvme controller at 8:00.0

I still can't understand what that vdisk is: if windows is installed on the nvme disk passed through, delete any "boot order" line in the xml (now it boots with priority 1 to that vdisk and not to the nvme disk).

After you delete that lines, if it will not boot automatically from the nvme press esc at the ovmf boot and set in the ovmf bios the boot priority.

I think that was something left over that should have been removed. in troubleshooting i tried adding a small v disk per someone's suggestion on the forum in another thread i thought i had removed it already. I guess i did not.

Before adding the v disk it would not boot still even though the only drive was the NVME drive. I did not know that you could go in to the OVMF bios so thanks for that tip. I currently abandoned this endeavor after spending almost 2 weeks fighting with VMs I was done plus I needed to be able to use one for work this week. So for now I just using unassigned devices to mount the drives then storing the Vdisk on there as again from someone else suggestion and claim that performance is nearly the same.

I will probably revisit it at some point so I appreciate the info. If I had to guess going in to the bios and at least checking the boot could have fixed the issue. In case that info helps anyone else out.
