Level One: Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3

Featured Replies

This is my first post here, and I hope it's ok to report Level 1 certification...

I chose the Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 rev. 2.1 motherboard for its feature list and value (£78 inc. tax delivered in the UK). My mobos are reallocated to different projects during their life, so futureproofing is important to me.

It's an AM3 board, so I can run the great value 45W TDP Athlon II with Unraid, and upgrade to Phenom Black with onboard OC later.

Features include:

2oz. Copper power and ground layers, 8-pin ATX 12v block & 24-pin ATX power block

AMD 870 / SB850 chipset

Up to 16GB DDR3 dual channel DIMM

6x SATA 6Gb/s

2x SATA 3Gb/s

2x eSATA 3Gb/s

1x Gigabit LAN: Realtek 8111D

1x PCI-E x16 at x16

1x PCI-E x4  and 2x PCI-E x1(runs as either 3x PCI-E x1 or 1x PCI-E x4)

3x PCI

2xUSB 3.0 and 12x USB 2.0

S/PDIF optical out, Firewire, hardware RAID (not used) etc.

Configured with:

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 240e

RAM: Kingston ValueRam 4gb (2x2gb) DDR3 1333MHz HyperX XMP Memory Kit CL7(7-7-7-21)

(runs CL9 ram as well, chose this to O/C in the future)

HDD: 2x WD20EARS - these are firmware 00MVWB00, built 26 Dec 2010, and have had no load cycle issues to date

Graphics: an elderly PCI Matrox Millenium card

PSU: BeQuiet 530W (80plus design with plenty of over/under circuit protection)

Power consumption at the wall is:

39W idle, 2 drives spun down

44W idle, 2 drives spun up

73W peak seen while loading the array and writing parity

The board wakes reliably to a WOL packet - this is with the standard BIOS shipped.

I've run the drives through all the SATA 6 and SATA 3 sockets with no issues.

The board drives 4 fans and the BIOS gives CPU overheat and fan fail warnings.

Been running ok in Unraid trial and then 4.7 for 2 weeks now.

Runs 8x SATA HDDs, with space for 1-2x Adaptec 1430SA for 4-8 more HDDs if needed.

Issues unresolved so far:

Blank console screen when waking up (but unraid runs fine) - not bothered as I drive it from the browser

Can't reduce speed of case fans anywhere

I believe I've successfully carried out the L1 testing for this motherboard and have attached a syslog.  I plan to continue testing it with UNRAID but so far it's looking good.

Cheers Judy
