Helmi Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 Hey everyone, I'm rather new here so please bear with me if I may sound a bit like a noob - it's simply because I am. I'm planning to swap my Synology DiskStation for an Unraid server. I recently replaced my gaming rig and the old one is still quite sporty so I thought it would be quite good to use this as a base. It's an AMD 3950+ w/ 64GB ram and an Nvidia 2080. It's currently running windows and the only real downside when it comes to Unraid is the case as it doesn't really offer room for drives. That's just not what is meant for. So I'm basically looking for a case to fit 8 Drives without big trouble. We will be moving houses in roughly 1-1.5 years and I plan to put it into a 19" Rack then. So this should somehow fit. Doesn't need to be a full fledged server case but it should somehow fit in there ideally. I saw that People use the Define from Fractal. I have their Meshify in use on my new Gaming Rig and kind of am very happy with it. Although... any other ideas what might make a good case? Maybe even some rack mount options? The mainboard in the machine is a B450 Gaming Pro Carbon from MSI which should work but only offers 6 SATA Ports. Not sure if there are even boards usable out of the box for more drives or if some extension hardware is the way to go here. What's good to use here? I'm willing to pay a few bucks for proper hardware instead of experimenting too much so I'd rather listen to what the experienced guys have to say here. Use case of the unraid server will be a mix of local storage, Additional Backup for some cloud drives and more and more also Application serving which is the primary reason why I plan to switch away from the Syno. I might want to try moving the existing windows installation that is currently running on the machine over to virtual and add some docker (sonarr, nzbget, iobroker, node red, etc.) Thanks for any hints and sorry if the post got a bit long.
