Help selecting SATA controller card.

Recommended Posts

Greetings, I would like advice on choosing a SATA controller. I returned a SATA controller recently purchased from Amazon because I had problems with it.

I chose 2 cards from eBay(theartofserver), and I would like some advice on if they will fit my needs.

This is the list of cards that I chose from: https://www.ebay.ca/sch/Disk-Controllers-RAID-Cards/56091/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_mPrRngCbx=1&_udlo=45&_udhi=150&_ssn=theartofserver&LH_PrefLoc=3&rt=nc&_dmd=1&LH_BIN=1

Card 1: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/164530748878?hash=item264ecbfdce:g:ZAAAAOSwlAdfuu7O
Card 2: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/163197898846?hash=item25ff5a505e:g:llcAAOSwMYtcQEG0

I need to be able to add 4 additional drives (two SSDs and two HDDs) and maybe 2 more down the line.

I am a complete beginner to unRaid and would appreciate any advice.

No, nothing outside the server. Although I noticed the external port on the back, I thought it was on account of the type of card. not something I had to use.

SFF-8087 just requires a special cable, right? but perhaps the best choice would be the SFF-8087 since that would allow further expansion in the future.

I found a few more SAS cards on eBay after doing a little more research.

(sorry for the long links)

I'm not sure which card is the best.

For internal drives only, skip the 4e4i boards and focus on 8i only (8 internal).

Regarding ebay, always remember that selecting the buyer is as important (or more ?) than selecting the product.

I think that you linked to ArtofServer on your early proposal. Never worked directly with him because shipping to Europe is quite expensive, but this seller has a very good track record.

As for the specific LSI chip, I am not very knowledgeable on that. It would depend on what you plan to use with the board ? Only HDDs or also SSDs ?

My plan was to add two HDDs and two SSDs and perhaps some more if I were to upgrade my case in the future.

I can't seem to find any 8i cards in his store. But the art of server looks like he has a great reputation.

There are no more free Sata ports on my motherboard, so I simply need more Sata ports If other types of cards can meet my needs, I'm open to suggestions.

Keep in mind I live in Canada, where selection is quite limited for a reasonable price
