[Dead] HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 2TB $64.99 (AR)

Featured Replies

Man I'm really tempted.  I hate rebates but really liking $65 a drive.  Then again, they will probably be at this price in a few weeks w/o a rebate.

Decisions decisions....

Might be worth jumping on. Amazon's price on this has gone back up to $89.99.

There is a max of 2 drives per household for the rebate.

Back up to base price of $89.99... price freaking changed between putting them in my basket and going to check out :(

Back down to $74.99... in for one!

I bought 6 of these drives in the last few days.

2 from Micro Center - dated Dec 2010, FW: 180

2 from Amazon - dated Dec 2010, FW: 180

2 from New Egg - dated Jan 2011, FW: 580

I've run 2 successful preclears so far on the ones from Micro Center, the others arrived today so will start their preclears this evening.

I am unsure if the FW:180 and FW:580 on the packaging refers to the firmware version? I can find no mention of firmware updates for these drives on the Hitachi website.

I'll post more once I have them connected up

That is what it means...my newly precleared drive shows:

Firmware Version: ML6OA180

Have the disks running through preclears and I can now confirm the following from the unRaid Smart View MyMain Plugin

Dec 2010 HDDs FW 180 have Firmware = ML6OA180

Jan 2011 HDDs FW 580 have Firmware = ML6OA580

I'm unsure what the difference in Firmware is and whether the earlier HDDs need updating

Probably just a normal revision.

Just got a new Hitachi HDS5C3020ALA632 delivered by UPS today.  Firmware Revision:  ML6OA580

Now pre-clearing...  Started pre-read at 131 MB/s  Now 30% through pre-read and down to 120 MB/s.

(It will replace a 2TB Seagate ST32000542AS that died part-way through its second pass in a pre-clear cycle.)

Currently on the Pre Read step and I have the following:

HDD:Pre Read 25%:Pre Read 50%:Firmware:

sda120MB/s102MB/s180

sdb117MB/s102MB/s180

sdc117MB/s105MB/s180

sdd98.8MB/s93.6MB/s180

sde109MB/s99.6MB/s580

sdf98.9MB/s99.1MB/s580

sda->sde are connected to Sata III connectors

sdf is connected to a Sata II eSata external dock

How come you're getting 130MB/s  :(  ???  :(  ???  :(  ???

Other than the HDD itself, what else determines the performance of the pre-reads?

thanks

Alex

I'm only doing one pre-clear... and the server is completely idle otherwise.  (you are apparently doing multiple)

If it makes you feel any better, it is now at the 70% point in the pre-read and I'm down to 85 MB/s.

The rebate makes you pull the SN and barcode off the drive...

Does anyone know what happens if the drive needs RMA-ing?  Would have thought that Hitachi would tell you to get lost!  Putting mine through a 3x pre-clear to try and get past the first end of the bath curve.

It is on the anti-static bag on a label there.  That is what I'm sending with the rebate form.

I sent in the barcode sticker cut out from the anti static bag and my rebate was validated.

Good call... didn't even notice the sticker on the bag.  Fortunately I didn't throw it out!

Thank you for the info.

Question: I bought one of these and had it shipped here. This is my first 2TB drive outside of the WD EARS and I was wondering when I pre-clear this, do I need to use the -a option?

It is not required, but if you use the advanced format feature it won't hurt the drive either.

No, use -A

So quick dumb question for the rebate experts---are rebate forms like this that say limited to two require two separate forms or will they accept one form for two rebates (with both serials etc.)?

Just got to thinking about this as I'm waiting on a 60.00+ rebate (can't remember exact amount) from WD that I haven't received yet and it was same thing--limit of "x".

Did anyone happen to download the Hitachi rebate from Newegg the past few days? It's not on their site anymore and I forgot to grab it.

If you go to the invoice for the drive, there should be a link to the pdf file.

I'm looking at the invoice, but I don't see a rebate link. Maybe I have to wait till the order ships. I ordered on Thursday with 2-day shipping, and yet it still hasn't shipped. Shipping on Monday will be delivery on Wed and that's 6 days from ordering. Ridiculous if you ask me.
