March 24, 201115 yr This is my first post and I'm about to try and build my first unRAID server. http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barracuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST32000542AS-Bare/dp/B0028Y4CY6/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300990984&sr=1-4 Do you guys know if this is a good drive to pick? I already picked up the Hitachi 2T drive from amazon earlier but would rather not buy multiples from the same brand/batch. That's why this Seagate one looks promising to me..
March 24, 201115 yr They work, but personally I don't like them very much. You have to update the firmware, which is a pain. Plus one of mine started throwing SMART errors after just a few months of use (granted, I never updated the firmware on that one). I had to pay $10 for Seagate's advanced replacement because Seagate's packing specifications are so ridiculous (plus they make you cover shipping). Seagate sent me a refurb drive as a replacement, not a new one. I'm preclearing it as we speak. These drives have been getting lots of bad reviews on Newegg as well. So they work...but I still don't like them. Honestly, I would just go with a second Hitachi green drive or maybe a WD EARS. As long as you preclear all new drives thoroughly (at least 2 passes of preclear), then you shouldn't have to worry much about having multiples of the same drive. Specifically, jump on this deal: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=11929.0
March 24, 201115 yr Author Thanks Raj. My local Fry's still has the Hitachi (retail kit) for $69.99 for sale and I already picked one there too. I might just get another one there while it's available.
