March 25, 201115 yr I've been running the preclear script with the -A flag on the 10 new WD20EARS drives I purchased. Most finished in around 27 hours or so, but I had one that took 43 to completely finish. During the 0 fill it was only writing between 20-25MB/sec max where as all the others were much higher. When I originally tried to wipe the slow drive it complained about SMART the first few times I tried to run the script and would exit saying I need to pass the force flag but eventually it ran the script without complaining after I started the preclear on the third drive. I figured I'd get a bunch of errors at the end of the preclear with it but it says it actually finished successfully and didn't complain about anything with the drive SMART related. One thing I noticed though is that all the other drives listed both Temperature_Celsius and Seek_Error_Rate under the changed attributes but the slower drive just lists Temperature_Celsius. I'm assuming this just means that the value didn't actually change but not 100% as I'm still pretty new to unraid. Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated. Right now it seems like there is def something wrong somewhere, but I'm a bit confused since the preclear actually finished without complaining. Does this sound more like a backplane issue? I'm running a Norco 4220 case and the other three drives on the same backplane didn't see the same issues. Thanks in advance.
March 25, 201115 yr Were you running these Preclear sessions at the same time? If so, it is perfectly possible for one drive to run faster or slower than others, especially if on a different controller for example. If you were running one disk at a time, and using the same controller in each case then the different speeds would suggest there is a problem. What do the Preclear reports look like (they are normally saved to Flash when the script finishes)?
March 25, 201115 yr I ran into the same issue with one 2TB WD drive being slow in preclear, see: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10419.msg99065#msg99065 I took it back and got a replacement which worked at the normal speed. The SMART reports did not show any issues. Regards, Stephen
March 25, 201115 yr Author I'll probably end up just RMAing it as the write speeds do seem to be slow even after the preclear. March 28, 201115 yr I'll probably end up just RMAing it as the write speeds do seem to be slow even after the preclear. I tried a second preclear and a SMART long test in the hope that the write speeds would improve, but they didn't. Your SMART reports look fine, which is also how mine looked. Regards, Stephen
