Why ECC is so important on any system working with data you care about

Featured Replies

I had this question on my mind for years but never thought to look it up, nice share.

Interesting to consider the IBM study that says that for every 256MB there is one bitflip a month.

If I simply extrapolate to my server RAM, that's more that 8/day.

It's probably more complicated than just a few multiplications as data density and manufacturing processes reach smaller transistor sizes.

But still probably a sensitive matter.

Same thing for SSDs and HDDs I guess.

IMHO opinion it is much more cost-effective to invest the money in a redundant or double-redundant backup system

While redundancy and backup is important, I doubt that the savings made by not going to ECC can be enough to purchase a secondary system.
