MSI 880GM-E43 - $70 shipped

MSI 880GM-E43 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

$70 after promo code EMCKGHE67 (expires 03/31/2011)

An up-and-comer in the list of unRAID budget boards.  Makes a nice basis for a 15 drive (or smaller) server.  Only 5 onboard SATA ports, but the expansion ports still give you expandability up to 15 drives without touching the slower PCI ports.  This board is Level 1 Certified (thanks Queeg!).

Are the 90 degree right angle SATS ports on MSI boards a hindrance, or are they more beneficial than straight up SATA ports?

You might want to PM Queeg with that question as he has actually used the board (I haven't).  I would expect that as long as you plan accordingly with your cabling, it shouldn't be a big deal.  Depends on how cramped your case is, I guess.

If anything, a quick look at the board pictures indicates the (4) 90 degree ports (oriented towards the drives) may make cable routing a littler cleaner...

Possibly, but if you are using a very small case in which the space between the motherboard and the drives/drive cages is precious, then the orientation of the SATA ports may prove to be a problem...

I put the motherboard into a Rosewill Blackbone case.  At first I thought it would be a problem plugging in sata cables.  But I discovered that if you take off the right side panel on the case the sata ports are pretty easy to get to.
