transfer license to new build?

Featured Replies

Hi - I have a really old unraid server and I am in the process of building a new system.  I am going to assemble the hardware this weekend then  transfer the drives and the flash drive to the new server.   What will I need to do to ensure that the flash drive works on the new server and that the array starts up on the new system?

Do I need to do something to transfer my license to the new server or is that tied to the flash drive and not the server hardware?

Are there any special considerations for getting the array to start up after I move the drives over?

I just want to make sure I am prepared so that the transition goes as smoothly as possible.

This, usually it's plug and play as far as the array is concerned, unless using RAID controllers, VMs might require some changes.

I recently completed a server migration and it's ultra easy.  I turned off all Docker containers, VMs, and shut down the old server. Then, took all of the drives out, plugged them into the new motherboard/rig, moved my flash drive over, and started it up.  You do not have to worry about the position of the drives sda, sdb etc - Unraid picks up the drive assignment based on serial numbers, so it literally powered up just like normal, and when I clicked Start Array, it just turned on.  No forced parity checks, it just works.

Just be sure to set docker and VMs not to auto-power up, as the resource allocations will likely change, meaning you should review each container/VM before you fire them up.
