igk
Hm well..showing just as not installed now after rebootingbucket-diagnostics-20210909-1925.zip Tho all files present and accounted for Backed up the most important files, so even if i loose a data drive, no harm just inconvenience Edited September 9, 2021 by igk Quote Link to comment
trurl
Disk2 emulated so you should be able to rebuild it, except it is missing as you say so you will have to fix that of course. No attached disk that could be assigned as disk2 appears in your diagnostics Quote Link to comment
igk
So..if i reassign my parity 1 disk to my data disk 2 now, it SHOULD rebuild it? Quote Link to comment
trurl
The reason you gave for making parity2 is because you thought parity1 was too old. Why would you want to use it as a data disk? Quote Link to comment
igk
Em not exactly, but thats part of the reason. Always the plan to have a brand new hdd for parity. I would use it for data untill my new hdds arrive (next week or so), untill then my data is not protected...Plus this is good practice for when i switch all my data to unraid,, Quote Link to comment
trurl
Since you have dual parity your data is protected. Parity has none of your data, and can't recover any of your data without all the other disks, so parity is actually less important than any data disk. It would really make more sense to assign that parity2 disk as disk2 and rebuild the data to that, then replace parity1 when you get another disk for it. Quote Link to comment
igk
Hmm makes sense..problem is, i ordered disks that are smaller then this new 4tb parity... Ok so untill i get my new drives, i can reassign my old parity drive as the replacement data drive?? Quote Link to comment

That way I always get more capacity than I had before. Important for me since I have a small form factor build with limited number of disks. 10 minutes ago, igk said: i can reassign my old parity drive as the replacement data drive? yes Quote Link to comment

igk
I ordered new disks before one of my data drives failed..so yeah.. Mine is a mid tower with space for 8 drives, plus atleast 3 in the cdrom caddy:) Ty for all the help Quote Link to comment

Didn't notice that before. That would have been a good time to do parity swap, which would have resulted in the 4TB disk as parity1, and the old parity1 as the replacement for disk2. Nearly what you have now, except now you end up with 4TB parity2 disk, and no disk as parity1. Nothing wrong with that, but parity2 is a more complicated calculation (not so complicated that it affects performance for modern CPUs). The parity disks are not interchangeable but either protect from one failure. Quote Link to comment

But can't i copy from the old to the new parity drive??As per instructions on the unraid wiki.. Probably you were talking about parity swap here, maybe if you had linked the instructions it all would have made a lot more sense. Quote Link to comment
igk
Hm yeah probably..new to unraid, so reading alot of the docs is abit confusing at times. Quote Link to comment
igk
TLDR; 1 data drive failed Installed a second parity(larger) disk Resynced new parity drive Reassigned old parity drive as new data drive Rebuilt the data drive Relax 1 Quote Link to comment
