March 30, 201115 yr I had just received my Pro upgrade keys and was setting up server 2. All tests had worked fine, booting a Dell T110 from the Verbatim flash drive. Then, strange happenings. I'd just installed unmenu, directory caches, and rebooted when everything went sideways. Mounting non-root local filesystems mount: special device /dev/disk/by-label/UNRAID does not exist So suddenly the backup server is all kinds of useless. I chase my tail, reverting the config files, making sure I didn't accidentally rename the drive, reformat and start fresh, yep, even fiddling with USB emulation and IRQs in the BIOS. Reboot, reboot, damn that cursed endless server POST, reboot. No joy. I was at that point where something simple is taking far too long. It's time to switch tasks and wait for inspiration. Rocking back in my chair I noticed dust in the front USB ports. Two dogs, a cat, and floor-standing towers will do that. Move the flash to a rear case port and wham, UNRAID DOES exist. After a good vacuuming the front ports are back in action. So again, the simplest things...
March 30, 201115 yr Nice story... glad for the happy ending. Reminds me of that Sherlock Holmes quote: “When you eliminate all other possibilities, what remains, no matter how improbable, is the answer.”
March 30, 201115 yr When I started to read about front USB, dogs, cat, I started to think there might be a difficult data recovery operation needed with the USB stck having been eaten or buried somewhere. (Maybe just the way my mind works...) I'm glad that was not the case.
September 9, 201114 yr I know this is an OLD post, but thank god for it, I had the same thing happen, my flash was not mounting and the system was basically splat, moved it from an internal port I had setup to the back and now it boots. So thankful to have found this post and what you did because it worked for me to (no cats or dogs, just horribly dusty house)
September 9, 201114 yr It is so easy to forget the simplest of things when we are so forward in our thinking and used to working from the inside out. I think this post should revolve every couple of months to remind everyone to think outside of unRAID and technology for a bit.
