manual webGUI password change

I couldn't log into my webGUI, and after some investigation I tried manually changing the nginx password (ssh was fine) and it seems to be working now. 

 

questions are:

1) was this good practice?

2) any idea where I would look to see how this could have happened?

 

i am running 6.9.2

    Configure browser push notifications
    Chrome (Android)
    1. Tap the lock icon next to the address bar.
    2. Tap Permissions → Notifications.
    3. Adjust your preference.
    Chrome (Desktop)
    1. Click the padlock icon in the address bar.
    2. Select Site settings.
