How to set up Console with a motherboard w/o on-board gpu

Featured Replies

I have a GPU that is dedicated to a VM.  My motherboard doesn’t have a GPU on board.  Can I simply add another GPU to support a console monitor.  Back story, I has having issues with the server and couldn’t connect over the network.  So, I am “blind” w/o a console.

Yes, you can add a GPU and it will output graphics for the console.

Thank you.  Can do this without it affecting previously created VMs?

After adding the GPU, you may need to edit any VM that has a PCI device assigned to it.  PCI device IDs can change when new devices are added, so you'll simply need to verify that before starting the VMs after adding the new device.

Do I need to configure the new card to be the console output?  Or, will that happen on reboot?

The boot video card is typically determined in the BIOS. Hopefully your BIOS will let you assign the correct card, if not, you may need to switch slots.
