April 1, 201115 yr Thanks for the inputs... one more quick question. I am going with 2TB drive for the parity and rest of them as well. Should the Cache drive match the parity or any other drive? I was thinking to use a 750GB drive? Thanks... mod edit:split the last question to keep the other thread related to 2TB drives.
April 1, 201115 yr Cache drive can be any size, but should be bigger than the maximum you expect to transfer to the server in any given day. Although many (including myself) make the cache drive the same size as parity, as a "warm spare". That way, if there's a drive failure in the array, you can substitute it and the failed drive will be rebuilt on the old cache drive. Then you can order a new drive for cache. Just a bit of peace of mind should you have a failure, because that is when the array is most vulnerable.
April 1, 201115 yr +1, my cache (only for torrents at the moment) is a 2TB drive. Nice to have a spare. Josh
April 18, 201115 yr Is a cache drive necessary I would rather not lose 2tb of storage if I don't have to. What is the real world advantage in a 2 tb WD green drive situation? Thanks
April 18, 201115 yr Is a cache drive necessary I would rather not lose 2tb of storage if I don't have to. What is the real world advantage in a 2 tb WD green drive situation? Thanks The cache drive is NOT necessary at all. I ran many months without one at all, I was perfectly happy with my performance to. I, like many here, was keeping a spare 2TB drive around, waiting for the inevitable (hardware WILL fail). When, after reading many times, that other people were putting there spare drive to work, as a cache drive. I decided to go that route too. Like any drive in the unRAID system (parity must be largest or = to other drives) the cache drive does not need to be 2 tb, if you have a smaller drive hanging around, it could be a good use for it. In the end, it is a personal choice. For me, it makes sense to use my 'spare' drive as a cache drive. I don't need it as a cache drive, but it can be nice. So when the time comes to replace a failed drive, I will be ready. Then, once again, I will pick up a spare drive, and use it as a cache drive in the meantime. Bruce
