VMs Freezing

I am having an issue with VMs freezing randomly. I dont see any problems in the log for the VM and its not causing an issue with the host machine. The VMs are completely unresponsiveness and require the VM to be forced shutdown and restarted. Are there any places other than the VM log where I can look for problems?

maybe you could provide a diagnostic log.

But I am not sure to help you out, because I got the same problem. My Mac OS VM also Linux are working without any problems.. But Windows 10 - 11 VMs are also freezing randomly. Even my logs are "emtpy" not showing any problems...

 

For me maybe my AMD Server, but not sure why, because with Unraid 6.9.2 this doenst happend... I dont know why and how to fix this.

Did you find anyway around your freezes? Would be interesting...

Not as yet, no.

 

At the moment I see no errors in the VM logs.

 

I do however see errors in the Libvirt Log:

This was the log for the Manjaro VM when it crashed. Nothing draws my attention. I had to do a forced shutdown as the VM was frozen.

Strange... For me just my Win 10 and Win 11 VMs are freezing up... My Mac OS - / Ubuntu - / Debian - VMs are running fine without any problems. May logs dont even provide any errors or warnings -.-

I thought the libvrt log would show that the VM has crashed. So I am presuming the problem is occuring before the error/s can be logged.

I have the same issue with my Windows 10 VM. There are no logs in unRAID, libvirt, or on Windows that shows any kind of error. I notice that it seems to happen for me while playing a game and not really any other time.

For me it seems to do with 3D Acceleration. I dont know why. But for me it happens when I opened Firefox or any other programm which use hardware accelerations... And it not freezing instand it just need a few minutes... I dont know why...

I recently changed my VM from i440fx to Q35 and I haven't had the issue for a few days now. Might be something to try if you are still having the issue.

Still trying to work out my ongoing issues with VMs on unraid. At the moment I have been able to get my VMs to stop freezing. I have been disabling/enabling the VM manager and rebooting. Its taken a few restarts but at the moment VMs seem to not freeze. Though I am having an issue now where the mouse does not fucntion correctly when passed through. Everythign works fine when a VM boots into the live CD but once I restart the VM I find that my mouse activates on the opposite screen, I have two, to where the mouse pointer is. I can open the menu on my left screen by clicking in the position where the mouse would be on the other screen. Anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

 

I have tried a variety of Linux VMs and its always the same.

My freezing issue went away. I found that the newer drivers (virtio) are making some problems with Win 11. I uninstalled them and my VM runs okish. Its not fast or very fluid, but it wont freeze up atm.

I wanted to chime in here and I am having the same issue. My VM that is freezing is the latest version of PfSense (FreeBSD) that is locking up. No response from the console/ssh or the firewalls WebGUI. Nothing in the VMs logs or in UNRAIDS logs (even using the Enhanced Logs plugin). The only thing that kind of stood out to me was looking in the system processes in UNRAID, PfSense was recorded as using near half of my servers CPU resources (47% of my 24 total cores) . Im running a dual Xeon X5670 system but have VM CPU Pinning enabled for it ( cores/threads 8, 9, and 20, 21 ) Im not sure why its listed so high. In the VM, the PfSense WebGUI dash its only reporting 7%-10% CPU usage while the UNRAID Dashboard is reporting roughly the same for those cores. The update times look to be more frequent in the UNRAID dash, and I do see some quick jumps occasionally to around 40% on each of those 4 cores, but then falls right back down to single digit numbers. Is the 47% usage I'm seeing in the UNRAID logs reporting it as 47% of the 4 cores I have pinned, or is it reporting 47% of the 24 total cores in the system? I have another VM running Windows 8.1 Pro, with 4 cores pinned to it, and it has not frozen ever. I've only just had the PfSense VM freeze on me, and this is maybe the 2nd or 3rd time in 6 months to a year it has happened. The PfSense VM is my Firewall/Router for the whole house. When It freezes, I lose WAN connection, but my static LAN connections are all still working. I tried just restarting it from the VM popup menu in UNRAID and it didn't do anything. I had do Stop and Start the VM for it to come back up.
