Ubuntu VMs crashing

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm trying to create an Ubuntu VM, but it keeps crashing during install. It crashes randomly and doesn't matter what version of Ubuntu server I use. I've ensured all the virtualisation stuff is switched on in the BIOS.

The machine is a Lenovo ThinkCentre M93 Tiny. It runs everything else fine (plex, sonarr, sabnzb etc). But I'd like an ubuntu box on there to install cal.com.

It might be that it's running out of memory, but I'm not entirely sure. Diagnostics attached.

Thanks,

You only have 4GB of memory in total, so it is quite likely that memory is an issue.    How much RAM have you tried to assign to the Ubuntu VM?

Hi @itimpi, thanks for the reply.

I've given the VM 2048mb of RAM. Perhaps too much?

No...the opposite :D too low..

You are at limits both for unraid and linux (2+2 GB)...probably related to not enough ram available I agree.

And that 2 GB for unraid refers to use it as data storage..

Are you trying to install the Desktop or Server editions of Ubuntu?  If the Desktop version then 2 GB is the minimum RAM requirement.  When you add in in overhead for running VMs in the first place this leaves little RAM for Unraid as the host to use.  You might be able to get away with only giving 1GB RAM to the VM if you install Ubuntu Server.  The alternative is to simply add more RAM to the Unraid server.

Thanks all - it's definitely a RAM issue.

I gave the Ubuntu server 1024mb RAM and it now runs OK. But I will look to increase the RAM in this box to 16GB.
