Also noticed this in file /tmp/zerosdg, this is at the end:

1500222267392 bytes (1.5 TB) copied, 18577.8 s, 80.8 MB/s

dd: writing `/dev/sdg': No space left on device

Basically it fails in the post read, it says parts of the disk should be zero but its not. I've tried preclearing twice now. It's connected to the motherboard SATA ports too... nothing at all in the syslog... no drive errors...

anyone see this before ?

Link to comment

Yes, we have.

It is very difficult to diagnose.

The failure was here:

skip=1000 count=200 bs=8225280 returned 59505 instead of 00000

basically a command of

dd if=/dev/sdg skip=1000 count=200 bs=8225280 conv=noerror 2>/dev/null |sum| awk '{print $1}'

returned a value of 59505 instead of 00000

It could be the disk itself, or the disk controller, or the power supply, but usually has been bad or incorrectly configured memory strips.   (Run memtest overnight, at least... remember, it looks like one of the hundreds of thousands of post-reads failed and they occurred over a period of at least 8 or 10 hours.)

You can try running the above command.   If it consistently returns the bad value, then it might just be the disk.  If the value returned is all zeros, who knows?  It will constantly be an issue as the random read of incorrect data will cause parity errors and hair loss.  (you'll pull your hair out trying to figure it out)

several times it has just been a specific disk drive itself.  It shows no error, but returns occasional random data.   Fun, right?

The post-read-verify was specifically added to the preclear script to catch exactly this type of error after another unRAID user traced the problem to a disk drive that tested perfectly fine, but caused occasional parity errors, .....  after losing most of their hair.

ok, thanks. I'm running the post read only right now to see if I can get consistent results. I'll try some things to try to isolate whether it's the drive or something else.

It's definitely not memory test, I ran it 5 days straight without any issues.

ok, the 2nd preclear -V resulted in the following:

root@Tower:/tmp# cat postread_errorssdg

skip=1000 count=200 bs=8225280 returned 59505 instead of 00000

skip=106800 count=200 bs=8225280 returned 10405 instead of 00000

I'm going to try that command above to see what I get.

ok, the 2nd preclear -V resulted in the following:

root@Tower:/tmp# cat postread_errorssdg

skip=1000 count=200 bs=8225280 returned 59505 instead of 00000

skip=106800 count=200 bs=8225280 returned 10405 instead of 00000

I'm going to try that command above to see what I get.

The first line is from the first preclear.  The second was at a completely different address range.

(skip=106800 vs skip=1000)

Oh yes, I also just fixed the "dd" command above.  I had not put the "skip=XXXXXXX" in it initially.

If the commands return all zeros, then you only know it fails on occasion. (and those occasional random difference will cause unRAId to show them to you as parity errors,and lead to hair-loss.)

It could be the disk itself, the disk controller, the port it is attached to, the power supply, and yes even the memory on the server (although you've apparently tested it pretty well)

Try a different port on the disk controller first.  Since the error is so elusive, and so rare, I'd not trust a single preclear success to mean you've isolated the issue.  I'd want to perform the post-read verify multiple times with constant success.

As I said earlier, several times we've seen these errors to end up being the disk drive itself. (and it show no apparent error symptoms otherwise)

Link to comment

ok, so I've run the following commands:

dd if=/dev/sdg skip=1000 count=200 bs=8225280 conv=noerror 2>/dev/null |sum| awk '{print $1}'

dd if=/dev/sdg skip=106800 count=200 bs=8225280 conv=noerror 2>/dev/null |sum| awk '{print $1}'

and I get consistently get 59505 and 10405. Even in a different known good drive slot.

So it seems like it's a disk issue. Is there another command that I can use to write zeros to those sectors ?

Link to comment

dd if=/dev/zero skip=1000 count=200 bs=8225280 of=/dev/sdg

dd if=/dev/zero skip=10405 count=200 bs=8225280 of=/dev/sdg

Then try the first 2 commands again.

Not quite, but close

dd if=/dev/zero seek=1000 count=200 bs=8225280 of=/dev/sdg

dd if=/dev/zero seek=10405 count=200 bs=8225280 of=/dev/sdg

When reading you use "skip" to position the start of the read,  when writing you use "seek" to position the start of the write.

Here's what I did:

-moved drive to another known good SATA port, read data, it was consistent

-zero'd drive, then read, came back zeros, read several more times, it was zeros

-moved drive to original SATA port, read data, came back zeros, read some more, still same zeros

-wrote some random data to drive, read back value, read again... data returned is DIFFERENT! Read a few more times and it changed but then settled on a value

I then tried zeroing out, reading, loading some other data, reading, then zeroing... couldn't seem to be able to replicate it...

Nevertheless, I've RMA'd the drive... just playing with this drive until the RMA drive comes in...

Wow.  I'd try the same experiment on a different port, writing random data, reading back, expecting consistent results.

(So far, all the bad results have been on the same port and disk)  What is interesting is the disk returns no other apparent error.

Ya, that's what I'll be doing next. I even started a long SMART test which passed. Very weird...

Does preclear only write zeros to the drive? I'd actually like to see an option in preclear to write random or patterns to drive to further stress drives instead of just zeros. I know the test will be longer but for problem drives/situations like this, think itd worth it.

You are the second user to suggest that, but it would only be possible if you performed multiple cycles, with the final cycle writing zeros.

I'll probably add that option, but I can already hear the gripes about a multi-cycle preclear taking 50+ hours.  (of course, they would also be crying about random parity errors if they were not detected before adding the drive to the array)  It will be an option though.

Even when we write all zeros to the drive, the disk itself is magnetized with an ac signal for each bit.  It is a lot more complicated than we think.

I'll be curious to see the results of a smart report once the LONG test completes.

Here are the results after the long smart test... seemed like it passed fine.

Aside from that one time above, i can't seem to be able to replicate the problem. I'm running another preclear in the same slot that i experienced the issue.
