My question is, are there any issues with using such simpler devices and not a dedicated HBA like a LSI 6Gbps SAS HBA LSI 9211-8i (=9201-8i) P20 IT Mode

 

I'm just a home user so I am not sure I need something like an HBA card or not.

These cards about the same price as the card you referenced if you shop carefully on E-bay.  (Just be sure to buy from a vendor with a good reputation for quality and customer service. )  Plus that card has 12% one star ratings.  Remember that the LSI cards have a long history of stellar service in Unraid servers.  (While many of the cards on E-bay are used, these are often a better buy than the so-called 'new cards' as LSI has NOT made the early version cards for well over five years.  The 'new cards' are all made in China by unknown manufacturers using LSI (now Broadcom) chipsets, reversed engineered circuit boards,  and the remaining components obtained from the lowest cost vendor in most cases.)
