Quick Look at a UEFI BIOS Replacement

Featured Replies

That's pretty exciting actually.  What I would really like to see is for the option to disable USB disappear.  There's been too many times in troubleshooting environments in which I've had to break out my dusty old PS2 keyboard because the motherboard's USB functionality has been disabled for some reason.  I would love to throw that clunky keyboard away.

On a side note, is the company Asus actually pronounced A-soos?  I've always pronounced it A-sus because, you know, that's how it is spelled...

Heck if I know. I've always pronounced it Aces. LOL

I think

should clear it up  ;)

I had an old pentium 3 board that had a graphical, windowed and mouse controlled BIOS. It didn't have the bells and whistles the UEFI ones have but there's been nothing stopping BIOS vendors tarting up the BIOS for a long long time.

horray, that's sexy!

Can't wait to see the first unRaiders building machines with an UEFI board (and 3TB drives..  ;D )

Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to get excited about a graphics mode BIOS. But ability to boot from 3T+ is nice.

Note that using 3T drives don't require EFEI BIOS. Only booting from one. Since unRaid boots from a USB stick, and there are not too many 3T flashdrives ;), it is not an issue for unRaid servers.

oh... well apart from the looks of the things, which of course is a nice extra, I was getting excited about the UEFI/3TB thing...but being able to use unRAID and 3TB and larger drives is what's really important here, you're right. You still need an UEFI mobo to fully use 3TB drives though, right?

wrong.  you only need that if you are BOOTING from the 3TB drive.  unRAID boots from the flash drive.

I built a computer for my cousin last week.  Needless to say, my mind was blown when I first went into what I thought was the BIOs.  It isn't so basic anymore :)
