LVLAaron
It's been 5 years since I've had to do this (wow, I've had to same unraid system running for at least 15 years!) so pardon the maybe dumb question. I have a drive I need to swap out, it's got old age and showing some read errors. It's 5 years old (WD Red) and time to decom. I have a precleared 4tb disk ready to replace it. I remember a way to safely replace a drive without rebuild, as long as the drive being removed was empty. I can't seem to find that article or thread on how that was done... Can someone help me out? trurl
There is a way to remove a drive without rebuilding parity, by clearing the drive while it is in the array. But there is no way to replace a drive without rebuilding the drive. Parity doesn't know anything about files, and an empty drive is still full of bits that are in sync with parity. To replace that drive, the replacement must be synced with parity. Quote Link to comment
LVLAaron
Ah, that's what it was. I was trying to save some time since the drive is already empty... I'll just swap it out. Thanks dude! Quote Link to comment
trurl
Of course, you can New Config with whatever disks you want and rebuild parity Quote Link to comment
Raymond Belcher
You can always use the method in this video to replace a drive WITHOUT rebuild of parity. It just updates parity like adding a new drive Quote Link to comment
