Question about extra drive

Featured Replies

Hi,

So I have an extra slot to add a drive, have an extra drive, but don't need the space at the moment. There is plenty of space on the array. Is it advisable to add this extra drive to array or leave it as a spare in case one of the other drives fail and add it then? Does it make any difference?

Thanks.

You do not want any drives in the array that you are not using.   If you add it to the array then it cannot be used to recover any other drive that fails.   In addition it just another potential point of failure.   It may be better to not have it plugged into the server at all until it is needed as it is just consuming power for no obvious gain.

Thanks. That makes sense. Keeping this extra one offline until I need it to recover.
