April 7, 201115 yr Ok, this is probably an incredibly newbie request but can someone tell me how i go about diagnosing a faulty HDD? One of my hdd's is showing red in the web interface but when i look at the log it seems to be detected? Below is a syslog where i booted the machine up, stopped the array and restarted the array. What is the next step to diagnose what is wrong with the drive? The faulty drive is the 1.5tB drive (WCAVU0239637) set as disk 3. Syslog attached. Any suggestions on what i should do next would be welcome. Ok, so i decided to fight the Thursday lazyness and dig around the Wiki. Based on the attached Smart report Do you think it is safe to just remove the drive from the Array, reboot the array, and allow it to rebuild based on parity? Syslog.zip smart_report.txt
April 8, 201115 yr The SMART report looks good to me. I see nothing in there at all that would indicate there is anything wrong with that drive.
April 8, 201115 yr Did you pre-clear this disk? If not you should use pre-clear from now on. It is very good at detecting marginal disks that will give problems and fail early. You could pre-clear this disk now and see if it passes. Rebuilding the disk contents: 1. Stop the array. 2. Unassign the disk. 3. Start the array. 4. Stop the array. 5. Assign the disk. 6. Start the array and begin the rebuild.
April 9, 201115 yr Author Thanks guys, I have followed your directions and everything is back up. My suspicion is that the power supply is a bit dodgy and it dipped during a write, I will go buy a new one this weekend.
