Well, 1 finished completely...  Nothing jumps out at me, but I am new.  ;D

Also, I got my hands on a Broadcom 5721 Gig PICe card.  I might try that in lieu of the builtin and the old intel 10/100 I have in there now.

At BEST I would get 10mb write speeds... slowly dropping down to 3mb.  I could actually get 3 or so drag and drop copies going at once, they hit about 2.5mb each but it would eventually become unavailable.  This is from Mac and Win clients.  The web interface remained available  (it would slow down some). Ping times were < 1ms from multiple clients during the duration. Didn't witness a timeout.

When copying was there very much activity on the unraid hdds? Were the activity lights on at all?

  • Author

I had it in another room and didn't watch it while copying. I was mainly watching the web-interface for write errors, etc.  sdb finished, no word on sdc and pre-clear since this:

Zeroing Disk /dev/sdc in progress: 50% complete.
(  1,000,297,463,808  of  2,000,398,934,016  bytes Wrote )
Disk Temperature: 28C,
Next report at 75%
Calculated Write Speed: 14 MB/s
Elapsed Time of current cycle: 19:37:03
Total Elapsed time: 32:53:31

I may need to start that one again.  sdb is the parity drive, so the first regular drive (both bought at the same time) is the one that stopped pre-clear.  Interesting.

  • Author

Just kept letting it go.  Tower is still on. I can telnet to it.

Screen -r shows this for sdc (2nd drive - non-parity drive).

= Step 1 of 10 - Copying zeros to first 2048k bytes            DONE

= Step 2 of 10 - Copying zeros to remainder of disk to clear it

=  **** This will take a while... you can follow progress below:

So....

It's been a LONG LONG time.  Should I shut it down, remove the SATA cards and make the system real simple with just the two drives?

It seems, to me, the first (parity) drive is ok. I have smaller (<500gb) drives. Should I slim the system down, put in the smaller drives (leave the parity drive) and see what happens?

:(
