June 1, 201115 yr Author Well, 1 finished completely... Nothing jumps out at me, but I am new. Also, I got my hands on a Broadcom 5721 Gig PICe card. I might try that in lieu of the builtin and the old intel 10/100 I have in there now. ========================================================================1.9 == invoked as: ./preclear_disk.sh -M 4 /dev/sdb == WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 WD-WCAZA1273904 == Disk /dev/sdb has been successfully precleared == with a starting sector of 64 == Ran 1 cycle == == Using :Read block size = 8225280 Bytes == Last Cycle's Pre Read Time : 9:48:36 (56 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Zeroing time : 33:11:11 (16 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Post Read Time : 20:37:56 (26 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Total Time : 63:38:52 == == Total Elapsed Time 63:38:52 == == Disk Start Temperature: 26C == == Current Disk Temperature: 27C, == ============================================================================ ** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sdb /tmp/smart_finish_sdb ATTRIBUTE NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS RAW_VALUE Temperature_Celsius = 123 124 0 ok 27 No SMART attributes are FAILING_NOW 0 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after pre-read in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors pending re-allocation did not change. 0 sectors had been re-allocated before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors are re-allocated at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors re-allocated did not change. ============================================================================ ============================================================================ == == S.M.A.R.T Initial Report for /dev/sdb == Disk: /dev/sdb smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright © 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 Serial Number: WD-WCAZA1273904 Firmware Version: 51.0AB51 User Capacity: 2,000,398,934,016 bytes Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: Exact ATA specification draft version not indicated Local Time is: Sun May 29 15:18:34 2011 PDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. June 1, 201115 yr At BEST I would get 10mb write speeds... slowly dropping down to 3mb. I could actually get 3 or so drag and drop copies going at once, they hit about 2.5mb each but it would eventually become unavailable. This is from Mac and Win clients. The web interface remained available (it would slow down some). Ping times were < 1ms from multiple clients during the duration. Didn't witness a timeout. When copying was there very much activity on the unraid hdds? Were the activity lights on at all?
June 1, 201115 yr Author I had it in another room and didn't watch it while copying. I was mainly watching the web-interface for write errors, etc. sdb finished, no word on sdc and pre-clear since this: Zeroing Disk /dev/sdc in progress: 50% complete. ( 1,000,297,463,808 of 2,000,398,934,016 bytes Wrote ) Disk Temperature: 28C, Next report at 75% Calculated Write Speed: 14 MB/s Elapsed Time of current cycle: 19:37:03 Total Elapsed time: 32:53:31 I may need to start that one again. sdb is the parity drive, so the first regular drive (both bought at the same time) is the one that stopped pre-clear. Interesting.
June 3, 201115 yr Author Just kept letting it go. Tower is still on. I can telnet to it. Screen -r shows this for sdc (2nd drive - non-parity drive). = unRAID server Pre-Clear disk /dev/sdc = cycle 1 of 1, partition start on sector 64 = Disk Pre-Clear-Read completed DONE = Step 1 of 10 - Copying zeros to first 2048k bytes DONE = Step 2 of 10 - Copying zeros to remainder of disk to clear it = **** This will take a while... you can follow progress below: = = = = = = = = Disk Temperature: 26C, Elapsed Time: 101:31:01 924003+0 records in 924003+0 records out 1937774739456 bytes (1.9 TB) copied, 317634 s, 6.1 MB/s Wrote 1,937,774,739,456 bytes out of 2,000,398,934,016 bytes (96% Done) So.... It's been a LONG LONG time. Should I shut it down, remove the SATA cards and make the system real simple with just the two drives? It seems, to me, the first (parity) drive is ok. I have smaller (<500gb) drives. Should I slim the system down, put in the smaller drives (leave the parity drive) and see what happens?
