Using a data drive to replace bad parity drive... sequence?

Featured Replies

Saga so far has me with a flaky WD EARS parity drive. I moved everything off one of my data drives with the intent of using it for a replacement.

My next step seemed to be a mistake. I unassigned the parity and the empty data drive at the same time. UR then complained that too many drives were missing. So I reassigned the failing parity drive to its place. UR is treating it like a new drive so parity is shot. It was happy to take back the empty data drive, not that that does much good.

What's the shortest path to switching drives like this? I found a thread from a year ago but it assumes you start with good parity. I don't really want to rebuild parity on the dying drive as it seems a waste of time and the errors will make it agonizingly slow.

More drives arrive Wednesday but I would like to get the shrunk array going with parity by Monday.

Oh, this is 4.7.

Thanks guys.

Assign the drive how you want them then log-on and type initconfig. Make sure  you answer Yes.
