Hard drive replacement (solved)

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have an unraid server that is running for about 2 weeks now. Current scenario is cache pool with 1tb and 512gb SSD in raid 1 and array of 2tb parity disk and 1tb data disk.

The array disk are installed simply for me waiting for the real hdd, 3x 16tb. In the meantime, no share were made, only dockers container.

I was wondering, can I put all the share (auto share like appdata) on cache only so everything is copied to the cache (I got about 20gb space used), then scrap the whole array, put in the new hdd (I don't have enough sata port to connect all of them at the sametime without removing older one) and then go from there? The parity check on the 16tb is estimated to 3 days, I don't want it to rebuild each time I put a new drive and I though if I put everything on cache, it should work, no?

Thank you

If it all fits there you can, set all shares to cache=prefer and run the mover, files can't be in use or they won't be moved.

Yeah, that's what I did. But now, it doesn't want me to replace the parity and data disk at the sametime, thus I need to put back one of my old drive. If I do New Config, do I loose all my dockers /vm config (in fact, what do I lose?

You'll need to do a new config, data on the cache will remain.

Ok, and doing so, this won'T remove vm and docker from the gui (like I don't have to redo all my docker config or other stuff, it's just the array config that's wipe?)

No.

The total capacity of this configuration is equal to the smaller of the 2 drives, 512GB, since it is a mirror.

Yeah I know. I had these 2 drives in my pc so while I know 512GB is lost, it's better then have only 1 SSD in the cache and no protection. Thanks
