barnnzo
Hi All, I have my NewEgg cart all full and I think I might have made a few mistakes... Could someone take a look? Crucial 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820148221 $23.99 Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16822136514 $99.99 HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 2TB 3.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16822145475 $79.99 - +$5 mail in rebate CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 (CMPSU-500CX) 500W Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16817139018 $69.99 NORCO SS-500 5 Bay SATA / SAS Hot Swap Rack Module http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16816133030 $89.99 AZZA Helios 910 Black Computer Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16811517007 $77.99 - +$20 mail in rebate ------ BIOSTAR N68S3+ Micro ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813138293 AMD Sempron 140 2.7GHz Socket AM3 45W Single-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819103698 ------- Combo - $78.99 total w/ shipping: $506.40 I'll also ad a USB flash card.... I picked the MB/CPU combo because I wanted to grab everything from newegg and i'm not too keen with shopping on ebay. So... Raj's specs say that the 5 drive budget box can be upgrade by just replacing the Power Supply.... I don't really understand that. As you can see I already upgraded the power supply.... But isn't there more to it than that? The Norco SS-500 has 5 SATA slots. Doesn't that mean that it will use 5 Mother Board SATA slots? And to upgade to more than 5 drives you'd also need a SATA Expansion Card, correct? And if all that is true..... then I probably picked a bad motherboard since it only has 4 SATA slots.... Yes? the Ram seems cheap... That worries me. Anything else I'll need? cables, ect? this will be used as a media storage box. I have a Zino 410. that and the unraid server will be plugged in to a gigaswitch. It will store/stream anything up to full Bluray ISOs. The cart above it really what i'd like to spend, but I could go up by $100, maybe $200. I think 5 drives will last me awhile. I may eventually need more. I doubt I'll every go over 10 drives, but who knows.... I plan on buying all 2 TB drives for now. I don't think I need faster drives.... Not sure why I would. Thanks for any feedback!! Rajahal
You are right, you have picked a bad motherboard. Not only does it have only 4 SATA ports (6 is better), but it doesn't have gigabit LAN. That will seriously cripple your transfer speeds to and from the server. I recommend the Biostar A760G M2+ instead. The best source of it is chipsdigitalPC. Unfortunately, I just bought their last one today (sorry). You could email them and ask when they plan to have more in stock. There's also an eBay vendor who has plenty in stock. I and others have ordered from him, he is reputable as well. That motherboard takes DDR2 RAM, not DDR3. This is what I use, but pretty much anything will work. The green drives are fine, but I wouldn't pay more than $90 for any of them. The Hitachis are a great deal right now, you might want to go for more than one of those instead of mixing and matching. As long as you preclear all your new drives, there's little risk in buying multiple of the same drive. To upgrade the 5 Drive Budget Box just look at the following levels up (10 drive and 15 drive). You'll have most of the parts already, just buy the few that you don't. If you need any more guidance, let me know. The rest of your list looks good to me. For a 5 drive build you'll need 5 SATA cables (one per drive). Monoprice is the best source for cables. The motherboard will likely come with one, but it will be a locking cable which doesn't work as well with the Norco cages. I recommend just buying 5 of the Monoprice non-locking cables. I generally buy the Azza case from Amazon as it is $80 flat with free shipping. The $20 rebate does make Newegg cheaper at the moment, but it is a pain to deal with rebates. I would probably still just go with Amazon for that part. Link to comment
ilovegoodnugz
Is it bette to use 1 stick 2gb ram or 2 x 1gb Ram in a build? Link to comment
Rajahal
Ultimately it doesn't really matter. 2 x 1GB is slightly faster, but I really doubt that you would ever notice the speed difference. I prefer to use 1 x 2GB as it gives you more expansion options later on down the road... Link to comment
