April 16, 201115 yr I currently have 10 2TB hard drives. 5 of them are WD Greens and the other 5 are Samsung Spinpoint F4s. I'll be using my corsair 650w. I currently have these items in my shopping cart. Could someone help to review and see if all of this is compatible with everything? 1. 3 Drive Cages - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405 2. Mobo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182161 3. Processor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115056 4. Raid Controller - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358 I'm at a loss in which unraid version I should use since I've read something about the samsung F4s being an advanced drive? Is there a case someone can recommend me that crams 3 drive cages in the front? Anything else I'm overlooking?
April 16, 201115 yr Good motherboard - hard to find. I have the C2SEE (very similar). I also went with the E6700 CPU, which is quite a bit cheaper and has worked very well. Might consider it. You can save a few dollars on the SuperMicro cages and controller from buy.com. About $96 each with no shipping (controller $105) You will need 8087 forward breakout cables for the controller. You can look at the Antec 902. You might also look in the enclosure thread, pimp your rig, and other threads in the unRAID Compulsive Disorder forum. For drives, go with the Hitachi Coolspin.

April 16, 201115 yr I am not sure if you have read the 3x5 cage discussions here but you might have an issue with that mobo and the SuperMicro cage. I am working on a review of the four major cages used here by most (hopefully done this weekend) but found and issue with SM cages in mid-tower cases with full ATX boards. Something others have noticed as well, the SM cage is really deep. The fan assembly on the SM can cover/block about a quarter to half inch of the back of the mobo. As on that mobo that is where you find the SATA cables, you may have an issue. I tested with an Antec 900 (gen 1) and know the Antec 902 v3 it 2" deeper, but where? That would be my only concern, just something to be aware of depending on which case you get. If you don't mind going full tower, the Antec 1200 is great bang for the buck and will easily fit that mobo and the SM cages. Cheers, Shawn
April 16, 201115 yr What will the system be doing besides unRAID serving? Seems like a lot of processor unless your plan is to under-clock.

I'm looking for a matx case with no windows and ideally aluminum. Is there such a case out there? I looked at the lian li A17, but it seems like they stopped making them...
April 16, 201115 yr For an aluminum case with no windows, best bet is to browse the Lian Li stock at Newegg or another provider and see what you can get. Most other systems are a combo of steel and plastic and some sort of "opening" on the side panel. You will pay a premium though for the aluminum case. I use NCIX.com a lot, being in Canada, but they do have a US checkout. They typically have a good stock of Lian Li cases as well... Shawn
