SATA Controller Cards

Recommended Posts

Okay got myself a Adaptec 1430SA which should arrive in a couple of days.

Is this card plug and play, which i have read in the first post here or do i have to disable the card bios etc. like it ist described in the Wiki?

Should be plug n play, didn’t need to disable bios on mine, it needs latest firmware for >2tb support.

well after a few years of rock solid use and just upgrading the size of my six on board disks I decided to finally break down and buy a controller card

thought about the dell card but found the issue where you have to tape over certain pins and didn't like the idea of that and decided on what I thought was a old trusty supermicro card by now the AOC-SAS2LP-MV8

It has already shipped so hopefully I didn't screw myself over with this decision as I didn't see the possible issue with it until now

crossing my fingers lol

Can anyone tell me the difference between the Dell H310 and the LSI SAS9211-8i?

I can't seem to find a comparison in regards to unraid v6.

Thanks!

H310 has to be crossflashed to work with unRAID.

Crossflashed H310 = LSI9211-8i

Ah ok so then they become the same card? I was confused since there is a price difference between the two.

Also was wondering if the H310 ran as hot as the LSI?

Yes and yes.

These controllers need some airflow near them, or they run very hot, a standard 80mm or 120mm fan blowing some air on the heatsink is enough.

I have ordered an Adaptec 1430sa card from ebay. Ordered May 9, from Spain but has not arrived yet.

I'm about to be impatient.

Anyone have experience with Startech PEXSAT34RH ?

https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/SATA-Cards/4-Port-PCI-Express-SATA-6Gbps-RAID-Controller-Card~PEXSAT34RH

Can get this card (new) within a few days.

I've one different manufacturer, but virtually identical, same marvell 9230 chipset, it works fine but there could be issues if you use virtualization.

Is it the LyCOM PE-120 you have?

Yes.

How is the transfer speed compaired to Adaptec 1430SA with 4 disc mounted?

My mobo has the following specs.

- 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot (PCIE1: x16 mode)

(see CAUTION 6)

* PCIE 3.0 is only supported with Intel®

Ivy Bridge CPU. With

Intel®

Sandy Bridge CPU, it only supports PCIE 2.0.

- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot (PCIE2: x4 mode)

- 2 x PCI slots

- Supports AMD Quad CrossFireXTM and CrossFireXTM

Caution 6. Only PCIE1 slot supports Gen 3 speed. To run the PCI Express in Gen

3 speed, please install an Ivy Bridge CPU. If you install a Sandy Bridge

CPU, the PCI Express will run only at PCI Express Gen 2 speed.

CPU: Celeron G1610 2 MB (BX80637G1610)

The 8 discs i have connected to the motherboard. The connectors are as follows.

Connector - 5 x SATA2 3.0 Gb/s connectors, support NCQ, AHCI and

Hot Plug functions

- 3 x SATA3 6.0Gb/s connectors

I can't wait any longer. Gonna order a new card today.

Have two candidates.

Lycom PE-120 (72 euro)

Startech PEXSAT34RH (82 euro)

As plug 'n play possible.

I got this one a couple of weeks ago.  Works fine in my Media Server and was plug-n-play.  Only caution is that the chip set has had issues in the past with virtualization.

Got the PE-120 today.

Mounted it and connected the 4 x 3TB discs.

The system saw them right away (but had changed 2 of the sdX numbers, on the discs connected to the mobo)

Got it sorted and are now doing some preclearing.

Would there be any reason not to buy this card? LSI-SAS-9210-8i

I might get one myself.  It looks like it should work fine once flashed to IT mode.  Based on comparison here: http://www.servethehome.com/current-lsi-hba-controller-features-compared/

The only thing that might turn me off of them is that they come from China and I could swear I saw posts of counterfeit M1015s coming out of China on eBay.

I read a lot of the feedback on that seller, no one has complained or mentioned about any counterfeits.  Maybe worth checking out.  How would you know if it's a counterfeit?
