Folder permission issues after upgrading to newest 5.0 beta

Featured Replies

Hello all, I am regretting upgrading to this new 5.0 beta version from the much older 4.x I was on before.  I hate this new version.  It keeps giving me problems where I cannot access a TV show or Movie that I copy over to the server, giving me an Access Denied error when I try to access the folder.

I ran that permissions update script when I first upgraded to 5.0 so what the hell is the deal?  It took forever and I let it complete yet I'm still getting this permission problem..

I copy a folder full of files to \\tower\movies or \\tower\tv but then when I try to access the folder in XBMC it just shows a blank directory, and if I try to navigate into the folder in Windows 7 it gives me this:

What can I do to fix this?  It does this with everything I have copied there since upgrading.

Please help, as soon as possible, this is vital to fix because the server is useless right now

Thanks

hey,

I am just play around with unraid basic and upgrade to 5 from 4.7 and have the same problem.

I was able to access my user share via the util and click on new permision. after that every thing is accessible.

Hope it help.

click on the fix permissions button again after you do any manual file operations

What is defines a "manual file operation"? Will I need to fix the file permissions every time I copy to the server?

This must be a joke, you mean we are expected to run this idiotic script every single time I copy a new item to the server?  Come on man, that is no solution..

Fix permissions or New permissions?

The new permissions scripts takes at least 1 hour to complete because I have 12 disks.  Where is "Fix Permission" ?

  • Author

Hello, the "New Permissions" script clearly says its a one-time operation, and I tried running it again and it takes as long as ever, it processes each disk individually and is slow as mollasses

What am I supposed to do??  How do I move files to my server under public permissions?  I need help here !!!

Did you follow the instructions when upgrading? Did you re-create your users and shares?

Did you restart your server when it was doing the new permissions script?

Have you tried running the new permissions script overnight, then restarting the server before trying to copy anything? There is no need to run it twice, as long as the upgrade instructions were followed, and you let the new permissions script complete.

It pays to be kind to the community, not be rude in the initial post. Especially when it's a beta. We will answer your questions, as long as you're nice. Otherwise you'll have to go to Tomm.

Hello there, thank you for the reply

I did not have any users to begin with on the prior install so I didn't re-add anything.  And as far as the shares go, they were already there when I upgraded, I didn't change anything.  I have an AUDIO share and TV and MOVIES for user shares and I didn't need to re-make them

I have found what the problem is I think.  Once I copy a file to the server , it for some reason is owned by 'root' instead of 'nobody.users' like the rest of the files.  If I go onto the unRAID server itself and chown -R nobody.users the folder, then it fixes the problem.

I am not sure how to proceed?  WHat should I do next?

Thanks all

What are your share settings?

Is root the only one that is allowed right access?

add a user and then log into that share as that user, see what happens.

I just recently upgraded to 5.0b6 so if I find anything like what you are mentioning I will check back here and let you know how I solved the problem.

Definitely add another user for general use. You're better off not using root for shares for a number of reasons.

I still suggest (re)running through the steps in the upgrade notes:

If present, delete these files from the flash (sorry, you will have to re-enter all your users after booting this release):

config/passwd

config/shadow

config/smbpasswd

I am having the same problem with file permissions. I can access my shares though. When I download to the cache drive, root has the only permission. I have already ran the new permissions script. So I use this command to change the file permissions to the new 5.0 security.

newperms /mnt/cache

When I download files to my PC and then copy them over, they are set as just a users group, instead of nobody and users groups.

On my PC, I have to type in a user name and password for all my shares, which does what it's suppose to. On my friend's PC, he can access most, but not all, of my shares without a user name and password. All of my shares are set up the same way. He has never logged in before, so the credentials cannot be saved.

I'm using 5.0-beta8d.
