April 17, 201115 yr So I think I am going to buy a Zalman ms1000 with 3 3x3 hotswap bays which would lead me to have ONE 5.25" remaining. Due to my OCD this cannot be allowed to happen, thinking of putting a fan controller in or an extra HDD hotswap caddy from monoprice. Anyone have any ideas.

April 18, 201115 yr I would just put in a single hot swap bay (such as the monoprice ones). It can either be your parity slot, your cache slot, or a dedicated preclear slot.

May 4, 201115 yr How are those monoprice racks? I'm probably going to purchase one more drive, which will max out my unRaid license. Right now I have my cache drive as an internal drive, the 5x3 rack with 1 parity, and 4 data drives, and this would occupy the 5th parity. I have the top external mount (Termaltake v5 case) as my dedicated pre-clear slot and/or to transfer data if a friend brings over a drive. I may then throw the last data into the Norco cage, and use this for either my parity disk. The rack is cheap enough, just wondering if you think I should get one with a fan for one drive, and it most likely being the parity drive.
May 4, 201115 yr I like the monoprice drive bays. They aren't as good of quality as the larger 4-in-3s or 5-in-3s, but they do their job just fine. My only complaint about them is that the drive doors don't always latch quite right...sometimes you have to release it and try again. Once they are latched properly they are plenty secure, though. The trayless design is very nice as well. As long as your case has adequate cooling, you shouldn't need a dedicated fan on the drive bay. My personal server runs 9 of those drive bays without any dedicated cooling, just the stock case fans. Drive temps are in the 30s, which is ideal.
May 4, 201115 yr I stuck one of those multi flash card reader with usb port panel thingies in my extra 5.25 slot and made a script that copied any inserted card to my unraid array upon insertion and then beeped to let me know when the copy was done. It makes a great quick backup sollution for camera cards and my portable usb sticks. I also think it would be useful to have some sort of small lcd screen in a 5.25 slot to display server status info such as temperatures, drives spun up and so on but there doesn't seem to be anything like that out there.
