Plex Plugin, WDTV not seeing shared drive for videos

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

Back about 10 months ago I built a new server and upgraded to 6.9.1. And so far it's worked flawlessly! I can access the files I have on the server from any of the PCs in my house with ease. BUT I cannot access the Photos or Videos I have stored on the server from any of my Smart TVs.

This is real odd because I used to be able to stream movies right to my old TV that was equipped with a Western Digital Smart box (WDTV). The TV with the WDTV is an older model Samsung that works great. I put the WDTV on it several years ago so my family could stream videos in MKV format and browse through family photos. My wife and I used to stream movies to it all the time. The WDTV can see the network and has no trouble connecting to it. But if I try to set the directory for movies or photos, it acts like it can't see the URaid Server and it's sharded directories.

The other TV is a new model LG that has the Plex Plug in installed. Using the App from Google Play, I can access Plex via my cellphone and even browse movies. But the LG TV cannot seem to locate the shared directories.

It sounds like there is a problem with permissions and such. Can I get a hand here?

The WDTV is a Linux device (At least, 10 years old since the last update) and you should be aware that Linux is case-aware.  Make sure that you have defined the path using capital and small letters exactly as they are defined on the server.  You also will have to make sure that the Unraid server still has SMBv1 running on it.  (It should be 'on' unless you have done something to turn off SMBv1.  Note that it has been turned off in Windows 10 for quite some time now.)

SMBv1 was disabled in ver6.10.0-rc2:

For new configurations, SMBv1 is disabled by default.

You can find the exact path name in Window Explorer by navigating to the share that you want on your Unraid server.  Then right click on the path window (see below):

Click on 'Copy Address' and it will be on the Windows clipboard for pasting into Notepad where you can print it out.

One more thing to consider is to use NFS rather than SMB.  More difficult to setup but it should work without a problem.

Open the terminal using the GUI on the Unraid server.  Type the following in the command line:

testparm -v

Enter the Enter see every SMB setting.  Look for these lines:

As I recall 'NT1' is essentially SMBv1

Thank you for the input. I greatly appreciate it.

After some research I found that many users reset the WDTV to it's factory settings. I tried that and it worked like a charm.

In regards to the Plex installation, the Unraid Plug in WAS correctly configured. It was the plug in on the LG TV that was the culprit. There was a rather critial setting hidden several levels deep that needed to be enabled. It was called, "Enable Media Server". Why in the heck ISN'T this enabled by default! :D Anyway, I enabled it and it works perfectly now.
