I had exactly the same issue and i could fix it by changing the VM Console Video Driver...

 

My Post:

After changing the VM Console Video Driver from QXL (best) to Cirrus start the VM and then change it back to QXL (best) the VM started normally

I had the same error when trying to install ubuntu.

 

Then I solved it by upping the memory from 2Gb to 8Gb max and 4Gb startup.
