Probably again: Which used server to pick?

Featured Replies

Hi,

this question probably pops up quite often. :D

I know there is a FAQ section that specifies which CPU you better go with (which is a XEON in generation <10. To use the iGPU, the GVT-g Plugin and have a slightly lower power consumption).

My plan is to use the Server as:

File Storage ( around 10-15 terrabyte, 3 drives)

Video Storage (survailance, 6tb, 2 drives)

A few VMs (2 SSDs) -> Pi-Hole, Blue Iris (Windows with video encoding), Home-Assist, Nodered, maybe Plex (not sure yet) etc..

RAM/SSD Cache (as I understood I can use the VM Storage SSDs (?)).

So basically 7 Drives with quite a bit of Ram.

Is there a generation of Servers (Dell, HP ?) that you could recommend for my project? The goal is that it is not to power hungry (so I guess no Dual CPUs?) and 2HE (noise reasons). How is the power consumption of the old CPUs? Or would it be better to go with a Ryzen System?

Dell 380 System pop quite often on eBay but I assume they are rather old and consume a lot of power.

Budget is around 800€-1k€.

Cheers and thanks!
