New drive straight to parity sync

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Finally got my replacement Parity drive back after the new one I bought failed within 2 hours!! Just popped it in and unraid just wants to run a parity sync. Is this normal? Thought the process was to clear, format and then do a parity sync??

Regards

Mike

The process for a parity drive is to create a partition (which just happens when you hit start) and then write the parity data. There is no clearing or formatting for the parity, since it neither has to be cleared or have a file system.

Many thanks.

Its spent all night running a paruty sync only for this morning to be shut down and restarted and decide to run another one? Is this normal? Its calling it another parity sync and not a check?

We cannot tell since you did not provide a syslog for any analysis.

Is the parity disk indicator "green" ??  or "orange" ??  That would be one clue.

The drive went green after the firstparity sync, then after a reboot it went back to orange. I'll post a syslog this afternoon. Thanks for the help.

hello, i want to do basically the same: replace my parity disk with a new one.

but i'm also adding two data disks ... what should the process be ?

- preclear drives

- add the two data drives

- i think it will ask me to run parity sync

at this point what i think i should do is

- do not run parity sync yet, shutdown the system

- replace parity driver, start the system

- run parity sync

is that about right ?

appreciate your help.

Many thanks.

How did you shutdown?

That doesn't sound normal at all. unRAID should never shutdown and restart by itself. So, if your server self rebooted then you have an issue.

lboregard - You should have asked in your own thread;

Replace parity. Do the parity sync and another parity check.

Preclear and add the data drives. Add one at a time and start the array and format before adding the next one. Should still just take minutes to do.

You could then run another parity check to make sure the array is still OK.

The server didnt reboot automatically, I did that manually. After it has performed a second Parity Sync it seems (touch wood) to be running as normal.

After replacing the parity drive with a bigger one I'm now trying to get the old parity drive into the array and I think its failed  :'(

Running a preclear_disk script and it hangs right at the start.

For all intents original issue is now resolved. If it occurs again I will post my syslog.

Many thanks for all the help.

Regards
