"Network Errors" When Downloading/Transferring/Reading from Cache Drive

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I thought I'd try to come here for some help or insight on an issue I've had for awhile. I've tried looking up the issue I have but I can't seem to find anything on it. I happy to listen to any possible solutions, user, software, or hardware based.

First let me go over my setup. Diagnostics also attached.

  • I have a double parity array with a 480GB SSD cache drive (PNY CS1311)
  • This server is on a 1GbE connection to an unmanaged switch, which this switch is connected to my main PC and of course the internet router (1Gb)
  • I have a main share "Media" on the array on Yes:Cache and a share "Downloads" on Prefer:Cache.
  • I have a VM on the server installed to the Cache which I mainly use for torrents to download on the server where it is hosted. (qbittorrent)
  • My qbittorrent on the VM is set up to download all torrents to the "Downloads" share until completed, which it will then move to the target location which i provided, usually somewhere on the "Media" share
  • When working at my main PC, sometimes I will transfer files to the server locally, download directly from the internet browser to the server, or torrent to the server
  • All files I download or transfer are usually medium to large in size (2GB to 20GB), but usually with multiple files of those sizes at a time. I would say 3 or more, and sometimes as many as 20. and this bullet point may or may not have something to do with the problem i am having
  • The mover is set to run every 4 hours, and the Cache does not often reach max capacity, maybe 70% usage at most
  • Basically the Cache is the central point of all files coming into the server before being moved somewhere on the Array
  • I also have Plex using the Cache for metadata

Which brings me to the issue. I noticed that when multiple downloads/transfers/reads are happening simultaneously, ALL downloads/transfers/reads stop simultaneous and give some sort of "network error" notice. Then I usually have to manually restart everything.

My only "solution" to this is to reduce the amount of downloads/transfers/reads at time, which is 1) inefficient for me, and 2) requires too much micromanagement from me going back and forth starting new downloads/transfers/reads.

I would really just prefer if i can just initiate all the downloads/transfers i need and let it rock on its own.

For example, on the Windows 10 VM, here are some lines from the qBittorrent execution log when this "network error" happens. These torrents will start, maybe get a bit of download progress, then all stop, and throw an error. (X:) is a mapped network drive for Downloads share, (Y:) is a mapped drive for Media share

1/17/2022 3:28 AM - Failed to move "xxxxx" from "X:\incomplete\" to "Y:\". Reason: xxxxx storage move failed. file_rename (X:\incomplete\xxxxx.mkv): Invalid argument.

And I've also attached a little screencap of attempting to download files via internet browser directly to the server.
