Parity Swap no copy button

Featured Replies

Hi,

I wanted to upgrade my 1 parity setup of a 10 TB disk parity to a 2 parity setup with 16 TB Disks. The old parity disk I want to become a data disk after the parity swap procedure. I read the "https://wiki.unraid.net/The_parity_swap_procedure" article, but in my case I don't want to remove an old data disk.
I first inserted the new first 16 TB disk and precleared the disk. The array ia stopped. I unasigned my old 10 TB parity disk in the parity slot. I now assigend the new 16 TB disk in the first parity slot an got a blue indicator.

I now could start the array with "Start will start Parity-Sync and/or Data-Rebuild."

But like in the article I want the Copy button, with a statement indicating "Copy will copy the parity information to the new parity disk". When I assign the old 10 TB parity disk in a free data disk 7 slot both indicator went blue, but I only get the message "You may not add new disk(s) and also remove existing disk(s)." besides the start button and not the Copy button, with a statement indicating "Copy will copy the parity information to the new parity disk".

What am I doing wrong? I am using unraid 6.9.2. Should I only assign the new 16TB drive in the parity slot and do the data rebuild? I thought the copying procedure as described is faster? Thank you

Parity swap only works to replace a disabled disk with old parity, not to add a new data disk, first replace parity, once that's done add the old parity as data.

The parity swap procedure is not appropriate to your situation where you are basically just upgrading the parity dtive(s).   It only applies in the special case of a failed data drive where you want to simultaneously upgrade parity and use the old parity dtive to replace the failed data drive.

in your case you first upgrade parity and then afterwards add the old parity as another data drive.

Ok, only to be sure that I understand you right.

First I assign the the new 16 tb disk in Parity slot 1, like I did here:

The old parity is still working inside the case, but not assigned to any slot and now I can click on start and wait until the parity sync and /or  data rebuild procedure is finished?

Yep.

Yes, but since you want to end up with dual parity you can also assign the parity2 disk and they will both be built at the same time.

Ah nice, but first I have to preclear the second parity too, right?

No as building parity overwrites every sector on the drive.   Preclear is never REQUIRED in current Unraid releases - the only reason for using it is to carry out a confidence check on the drive before using it in Unraid.

Thank you my friend!
