Is there a Way to Setup Share Duplication

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Comming for the WHS world, one of the nice things that it provided was setting duplication up for user shares.  I would like to do something similar on unraid.  Didn't know if someone already developed something.  If not, what's the best way to accomplish this.  My only thought was some sort of rsync ran from cron.  Any thoughts?

As also someone who's moved from the WHS world over to UnRaid...   one has to assume, IMHO, the following:

1) WHS does redundancy through file duplication -- protects from the failure of any one drive, since WHS makes sure the duplicated file is on a different physical drive.

2) UnRaid does redundancy through parity -- protects from the failure of any one drive, since the parity device can 'simulate for now' and 'rebuild later' any failed drive.

Both are redundancy methods.  Both protect from a single drive failure.  Both suffer from the lack surviving a multiple drive failure.

And accepting the similarities of failure models, in the difference of how the systems (WHS vs. Unraid) implements redundancy - is key to making that migration.

That said, there are two things that come to mind:

a) There are 'plans' (but no dates) for P+Q redundancy in parity -- eg, having TWO parity drives.   Would allow the UnRaid box to survive TWO drive failures at the same time.

b) You can access your files on a "disk" basis.  So, technically while /mnt/disk1/Videos and /mnt/disk2/Videos all appear to the outside world as "Videos" -- they are split among those two (or more) disks.   If you "want" -- you could have /mnt/disk3/Videos-dup and /mnt/disk4/Videos-dup -- and use an rsync to copy the /disk1 and /disk2 versions of Videos over to /disk3 and /disk4 Videos-dup -- seems a bit belt and suspenders though...

I guess, for me, I'm not trying to replicate the "WHS way of providing redundancy".   And that's part of why I moved to UnRaid.  (Not to mention that I'm getting nearly 50% of my disk space back, from not having to have every file/share duplicated) -- I am, however, keeping a small WHS just to do the windows machine backups.  It does just too good of a job at that.

Thanks for your explanation, but I probably should have left WHS out of it as I am certainly not trying to reproduce it, but merley mentioning that was a feature that I enjoyed.  As part of my back up plan, I have my important files on my main unraid server 'crash planed' to another offsite unraid server and that works well.  I have my laptops 'crash planed' to both unraid servers and that also works well.

I was mainly looking for share duplication for another method of redundacy, mainly just for photos and music.  I have my crash plan backups on a 2TB drive that remains out of the share pool so duplicaing other shares to it really wouldn't be a problem in my case.

BTW - is there any way to setup the WHS PC backups to store on the unraid server?  Probably not, but that would be sweet.

I don't know of any way.  While I know that WHS stores it's backups in a "certain" place,  I don't think you can get that to re-map somehow over to a share on unRaid.

{But if you or others are interested, this will tell you some info on where WHS does store it's backups -- it's possible to copy this directory over to unraid for a "backup of the backups"...} -- http://www.homeserverhacks.com/2008/07/ask-home-server-guy-part-3-d.html

I think that's about as far as 'we' ought to carry it here.  This is the unRaid forum,  not a WHS support forum.
