Off site backup deployment

Featured Replies

Hey all. I know this as been asked, but I believe I have a little bit of a different situation. I want to backup select files off site (pics and docs mostly) and I have some left over hardware to do it. I just helped a friend rig his entire house with a ubiquity setup and would like to take advantage of our symmetrical gig internet.

My thoughts: find a 2U rack to squeeze my hardware into and mount it in in his rack. Sign up for a basic unRAID licence as this won't need to be a huge deployment.

Complications: I'll have to register another domain (I think?) to reverse proxy in/connect our two rigs. He's not the most tech savvy, but good enough that he can handle unRAID. I'd probably register his instance of unRAID under my account just to keep things simple and so I can manage it.

My plan was to use duplicati so that our respective backups were encrypted. (I have yet to use duplicati or anything like it so I know very little about it.)

Looking for y'all to poke holes in this deployment and would love some feedback as how to simplify or make this more robust/secure. I figured this has been done enough times that there should be a fairly bulletproof way to do it.

Thanks all!
