Rumors: Some Seagate HDs warranty going down to 2 years

Featured Replies

According to some OEM dealers:

"Seagate will be changing its warranty policy from 3 years to 2 years on following product categories starting on July 02, 2011.

Barracuda and Barracuda Green 3.5” Drives

Momentues 2.5” 5400 and 7200rpm Drives"

So far no news on the www.seagate.com

Not much info elsewhere - http://forums.ncix.com/forums/?mode=showthread&forum=103&threadid=2348918&pagenumber=1&msgcount=3&subpage=1

Hopefully that means they're more reliable lol.

I recall many Seagates being 5 year warranty I believe?

A buddy of mine(an EE) works for Seagate and he told me HE wouldn't buy one of their consumer level drives. FWIW

Unless their quality has gotten better in the last 2 years I wouldn't touch Seagate drives with a 5 year warranty on them.

Doesn't do me any good when i am sending a dead drive in every month at my cost to ship.

See, less competition means consumers get screwed, and this reduction of warranty further demonstrates that.

I 100% agree.

I didn't even realize hitachi had been purchased by WD until this week. >:(

So the selection will be:

Western digital/Hitachi

or

Seagate/Samsung (Unless they keep samsung's line seperate)

I have a 1.5TB drive that died on me yesterday, so I get to play the RMA game :(

I love WD's RMA.  You can choose Expedited RMA, where they send you the drive first, you just provide your credit card which they'll charge if you don't send back your dead drive within 30 days.

I'd prefer this, because then I can just send the dead drive in the new drive's packaging. Samsung requires I send the drive in an anti-static bag, but all I have is a plastic clamshell case that another drive came in. And I like keeping those around. I have no idea where I can get an anti-static bag without buying one. Such a PITA.

Yeah, I tend to keep the old boxes around--with the clamshell case you referred to, and usually keep the anti-static bag also.  I just fold the back over and stuff it in the clamshell to keep it pseudo-sealed :P

I'll check the Intrex computers store down the road and see if they kept any static bags from installs.

I've got a ton of anti-static bags.  If you can't find one locally, maybe I can mail you one (unless you are outside the US, in which case it wouldn't be worthwhile).

Thanks for the offer Raj, I live in NC. I'm formatting the drive now to see if any of those pending sectors will find a home.
