Please help me get this running again!

Power went out to my house yesterday and the UPS did not have enough juice to keep the Unraid running until I got home to shut it down safely.  Well when the power came back on and I booted up the Unraid box i got these errors in the start up messages (there was too much text too fast so this is just what is left showing at the bottom):

Can not enable port 4: Maybe the USB cable is bad?

Port 4 reset error -110

hub_port_status failed (err= -32)

Mount: Special device /dev/disk/by-label/unraid does not exist

using /etc/random-seed to initialize /dev/urandom

Starting syslogd daemons: /usr/sbin/syslogd -m0

/usr/sbin/klogd -c 3 -x

/etc /rc.d /rc.inet1.cong: line 18: /boot/config/network.cfg: no such file or directory

/etc /rc.d /rc.inet1.cong: line 19: /var/tmp/network.cfg: not such file or directory

Then it goes to the log in screen.  I can not connect through internet explorer or Telnet.  The drives are not accessible through windows explorer.  I have the flash drive plugged directly into the back of the machine.  This had worked fairly well until the power went out.

Anyway to save this?  Anyone know what happened?  I really need to save the data that is on one of the drives!  I saved all the pictures of the birth of my son on this machine so it would be completely backed up.

Thanks in advance!

Relax... your data is almost certainly safe.

Power off the system, remove plug from wall, wait 10 seconds, then remove and reinsert your USB stick.  Plug it back into the wall and reboot.

If that does not work, try the same procedure and putting the unRAID USB stick in a different USB port.

Thanks for your response!  I tried what you suggested with every USB port on the machine with the exact same results.  The only thing that changed was the number of the port that failed.

I attempted to copy the syslog however nothing was copied to the drive.  I typed in "cp /var/log/syslog /boot" per instructions found in another post but nothing was copied to the drive.

Put the USB stick in another computer and check to see if the volume label is still "UNRAID"

  • Author

The drive is labeled "UNRAID"

What brand of USB stick is it?

Check the issues in this thread:

  http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1116.0

It may be some kind of corruption of the flash partition table.

Put the flash in another machine, and copy all the files off to another drive, reformat the flash using the HP tool, then put all the files back.

Just a small suggestion to add: since the console seems to be buffered, you can use the Shift-PgUp key combo to go back through many of the screen messages that have scrolled past.  Perhaps you will be able to spot something else relevant to the problem.

I think bubbaQ has absolutely nailed it at every step above.

Thanks for your help!  I will try formatting the drive as soon as I get back to the house.  I had to run to another location for a little while.

When using the HP tool what options should I select?  It creates a new syslinux.cfg file and I don't know if I should replace the current one.  Options I selected when running the program were: create a new configuration, hard drive, create new file system, HP Firmware flash package.

Those options don't make sense.  Are you using "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool"??

Select "FAT" as the file system and UNRAID for volume label.  Do not check any other options.

After it finishes, run SYSLINUX on it.  Then copy all the files back to it... overwrite everything, including the syslinux config.

  • Author

Well that is definatly one of the problems...  I used the HP Drive Key boot utility... I'll try the correct software and get right back to you.

Thanks!

Sorry, don't want to use the wrong thing again... Where should I get the SYSLINUX program?

Edit: I found it.  FYI the link on the Unraid commercial site is broken.

I used the format utility, ran syslinux, copied the files back and now I get this message:

Intel boot agent

DCHP \\\\\\\\

Intel boot agent

PXE-E53: no boot filename received

PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel boot agent

Reboot and select proper boot device.......

I think it is trying to boot from the network??

??? :'(

Assuming you have an onboard NIC, check your BIOS if the option to boot from network is enabled, it should not.

Check also that your USB is selected as boot device. (my own BIOS asus-fujitsu, screws up boot device selection if I change usb port)

While in bios check the date, if it is way off your mb-battery might need replacement

/Rene

That means it is not booting from the USB.

Doublecheck that you ran Syslinux corrrectly.

Check your BIOS to make sure you have enabled USB devices for booting.

Ensure the USB stick is fully inserted.

If your BIOS POST has an option like "Press F8 for Boot Options", use it, and select the USB stick as boot source.

How can I tell if I ran syslunix correctly?  I did run, c:\syslinux.exe H: , with syslinux located in the c:\ and H being my jump drive.  A black windows window pops up disappears almost instantly.

I looked at properties on my jump drive right after format and it had 4 kb of used space.  After running syslinux it had 16 kb of used space but no visible files.

What make/model of USB stick do you have???  Some have extra software that is incompatible with unRAID.  See

How are you running syslinux?  The proper way is this:

Open a DOS window first.  Then in the DOS window run:

   syslinux -sam  h:

This will ensure that you can see any errors.  Then close the DOS window.

Then download and install a NEW fresh unRAID install, and put it on the USB stick.  Try to boot your system with that.  If it does boot, DON'T start the array or make any changes.  Just shut it back down... this is just to confirm that your system can still boot from a clean unRAID USB install.

Assuming this works, replace the /config directory on the USB with your original one that you backed up, and reboot it.  That should get you back up.  However if it didn't work, you are going to have to do some testing with a new/differnet USB stick... some USB sticks are configured/formatted at the factory in ways that are incompatible with unRAID and take special steps to get them to work.  See this thread:

  http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=359.0

If it worked with the fresh install, but failed after copying the /config directory, you will have to rebuild your array configuration.  Did you print-out your configuration when it was working? (print-screen the browser display of the unRAID management utility).

Ok some results:

After reading http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1083.0 post I found that I was having the same problem.  I downloaded the corrected version of the Hp tool and now I am back to booting off of the USB drive.  However I am still back at the same problem that I started with.  I tried a fresh download of 4.2.1 on the formated drive with the same results. The USB drive is a Lexar JD lightening that worked fine before the power loss.  I guess the next step is to try with another jump drive and see if I can boot from that.

Definately try it with a differnet USB drive.  Also you can try booting another computer with your existing unRAID USB stick, just to see if it will boot up all the way on a different system.

Did you have any BIOS or CMOS errors during POST, the FIRST time you restarted your computer after the outage?

If you go into the BIOS, and then into the configuration for boot order, does the USB drive show up?  How about under USB config?

Ok after trying with another USB stick I was able to boot completely.  It UNRAID was assigned a IP address and from what I can tell from the lunix prompt all is well.  There were no BIOS or CMOS errors during post the first time I restarted the computer.  It just booted up as I would have expected (until the end I guess).  The USB did and does show up in the BIOS.

I can not use the USB drive that I used to get this running again permanently so I will need to get another one unless there is a way to get my old USB stick fixed.  Assuming that I can get the new one working as well do I only need to copy the files I backed up onto the new USB stick?

Thanks for your help!  I would have been dead in the water with out your help!

:D

Were you using the free unRAID basic with only 2+1 drives, or did you buy a license for another version?

If you were using the free version, just copy the /config directory from the old stick to the new and that's all you need to do.

If you bought a license and are using more than 2 data drives plus parity, then you will have to contact Tom to see about a new license for the new USB stick.

I saw the 1GB Kingston DataTraveler USB stick in the sale papers Sunday for $9.99... I think at CC.... and you can likely buy it locally.

Or FREE after rebate via mailorder:  http://www.fatwallet.com/news/index.php?storyid=614355

IIRC Kingston DataTravelers are NOT compatable with unRAID licensed versions, something about these drives not having the serial number the unRAID license needs.

Obviously that is incorrect... I am using one with my unRAID pro.

Obvious to whom?  ;D
