VM Ubuntu Install Hangs

Featured Replies

Newbie here. First time using Unraid and loving it so far. I have an issue in installing Ubuntu. ISO downloaded is Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. I have a Win10 VM that is installed and has no problems whatsoever, its just this one. After loading up the VM, it goes through the install screen of Ubuntu, and once that finishes. the screen just goes Purple. I know after that Purple screen, it'll take me directly to the Ubuntu Desktop. I've tried to restart the VM and still nothing.

Specs of my Server are:

CPU : AMD 5950x

RAM: 64GB @ 3200Mhz

Mobo : Asus Crosshair VII Hero Wifi

GPU : GTx 780ti

I've tried researching and I've tried different variations in the installing the VM from:

CPU Host Passhthrough to Emulated

Q35-5.1 to i440fx-X.X

OVMF to SeaBIOS

I've basically gone through at least 8 different variations but still no luck. There are even times when I have it a certain config, the VM would not even any graphics at time of booting up.

Any help please?

Did you pass the gpu to the vm or did you connect via vnc remote?

Just connected via VNC Remote.

Does it get all the way through installing? If it hangs at the beginning or in the middle of the installation, I had a similar problem and when installing, choose the "Safe Video" (or something like that) mode.

It will install all the way through,  but once it goes to the purple screen it'll hang, but good idea, I'll try that out right now

Whelp, it was worth a try. I did get a bit further. I have two Unbuntu VMs two different configs

VM 1 = i440fx-5.1 / OVMF / VNC. It got to the "Keyboard Layout" screen it just froze after that. I know it's frozen since the time is not matching up with the current time and it's been frozen for 23 minutes now.

VM 2 = i440fx-5.1 / SeaBIOS / VNC. It just got to the first "Install" screen, and its frozen.

So VM 1 is just one page further than VM 2.
