Replacement for Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 or Biostar A760G M2+

Featured Replies

I'm looking to replace my Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 rev 1.1 (with unfixable HPA issues) and was going to get the Biostar A760G M2+, but I can't find it for sale anywhere anymore. I'm looking for something in the budget range, nothing too fancy, just comparable to the Gigabyte/Biostar boards (obviously with no HPA issues) and preferably 6 SATA ports. Any suggestions? I can't seem to find any new information on newer boards that would replace something like the Biostar A760G M2+. I don't want to replace everything on my MOBO, or spend a ridiculous amount of money on one for what I don't need. Thanks!

Did you check eBay for the Biostar board?  I can't check it right now due to work firewalls.

Yeah, there are quite a few on eBay at the moment.  However, in an assumption the OP searched eBay and simply doesn't wish to use it -- tigerdirect has them on hand for $49.99 + shipping (I'm guessing, it doesn't mention it until you add it to cart I believe).

They're running a combo with the Biostar mobo and a X2 255 (3.1GHz Dual Core 2x1MB L2 cache) for $110 + shipping but that's via their eBay auction only it seems: http://cgi.ebay.com/Biostar-A780L3L-AMD-760G-Socket-AM3-Motherb-Bundle-/350458658142?pt=Motherboards&hash=item5198f6bd5e

My other source for the board is ChipsDigitalPC.  They are out of stock right now, but you could email them and ask if they can get more.

Thanks everyone. I searched eBay and couldn't find the exact model of the Biostar, so I assumed anything else wasn't as good and I came here. I didn't even think to search 760G or Tigerdirect. The one on Tigerdirect has DDR3 Ram, I've only got DDR2 in my set up right now. I'm really only looking to swap motherboards, not have to replace anything else. I'm on a tight budget and I'd rather save any other necessary costs for an extra hard drive (I've only got 35gb left on the server).

If you live near a microcenter, there's some good deals on mobo/cpu combos going right now.  You could then sell or re-purpose the CPU.

Here's some more boards to look at:

880G chipset boards w/ 6 SATA ports

880G chipset boards have been getting mixed reviews on these forums.  Some of them work great with unRAID, some have compatibility problems with SATA controllers.  Do your research before choosing one.

These three open box deals stick out to me:

MSI 880GM-E41 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - the Atheros NIC is questionable, it may or may not work.  Worst case scenario is that you have to buy a PCI NIC for $30 or so.

BIOSTAR TA880GB+ AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - I see no issues with this one, and I have great faith in Biostar boards.  I have yet to see one that is incompatible with unRAID.

JetWay JMA3-880GP-LF AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - The only thing that jumps out at me is the lack of a PCIe x1 slot...quite odd.  Otherwise it should be fine.

Open box deals are hit or miss.  Generally the board itself is fine, but they sometimes ship without any accessories.  You can look the manual up online, no big deal there.  SATA cables are cheap, no big deal there.  However, finding the right IO panel to fit your board can be a huge pain.  Technically you can run without it, it isn't a crucial piece.  But if you have any OCD tendencies, then you'll want one.
