1.  Since I'm using advanced formatted WD Green 2tb hd's, I was reading that I need to change some sort of spin/clock timer or something, something to do with a program called weide or something like that?  Is it necessary?  What does it mean, that the disks are spinning to often and reduced the life cycle?

2.  I want to turn off the tower at night when no one is using it.  Most of the time my brother falls asleep while watching and thus it stays on.  Is there a way to somehow constantly change/adjust like a sleep timer or shutoff timer in the main status page?  I know there are addons but how easy are they to manage?  Thanks

A google search is your friend.  The program you are looking for is called wdidle3 (here).

There are a couple of ways to do this, though there are different things that need to be done if you are running anything besides unRAID on the server.

1.  Is it easy/safe(existing data)/and necessary to do?

2.  All I have is UnRaid installed.

1.  Is it easy/safe(existing data)/and necessary to do?

Honestly I have never done it, but I would assume it is fairly easy especially if you have a little bit of computer knowledge.  As far as safe, I believe it is, though with anything like this stuff could happen.  Some people think it is necessary, and some don't.  It is up to the user to decide that.

2.  All I have is UnRaid installed.

If that is the case, then do some searching and see if you can find a way that works for you.

I would monitor the load cycle counts on the drives (via a SMART report) before wdiddle3'ing them.

There is a script around here somewhere to sleep the server after all the drives had spun-down. Pretty easy to use.
