ISE drives and preclear

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I 'm new to Unraid so please be gentle :)

I have a bunch of 12TB ISE drives, shouldn't preclearing the drives be instantaneous? I mean that's what the I stands for right? It is not. Am I misunderstanding something?

I can't seem to find any information on actually instantly secure erasing a drive in linux.  These are HGST Ultrastar drives (but not as awesome as before they were before being bought by WD).

I did not read about those drives but I would guess that they drive are not magically capable of writing a full disk instantly and that secure erase is similar to a quick format of the FS and some encryption data.

That is not similar to drive clearing.

In Unraid, clearing a drive (in the array, or in advance : pre-clear) is writing zeros in ALL sectors of the drive to be certain that parity will be OK when adding the drive in the Array.

Hmm. i would assume that the only way to secure erase but I haven't managed to get more details.  Thanks for the response. I want just sitting there thinking it would be seconds. :)
